Syril is the embodiment of middle class depoliticized white men who are delusional about their role in to maintain the empire. He does not believe in fascism (unlike Dedra, where fascism is literally the thing that raised her), because he can not see the fascism before him. He didnt not know who he was - he never truly did, he believed in abstract notions of “justice” and “order”- but even that the empire stole from him, which is why he overreacted so hard, if he was a “good little fascist” he would have stayed with Dedra and lived.

But his love for dedra (fascism) ended his own life, after saving her twice unknowingly. The tragedy of empire is the erasure of what Syril “could have” been and even denial for syril to find fulfillment in creating true justice, true order and find a true family. And even though he jumped the fence at the end, it was too little, too late. Hating Andor was the only thing that made sense in his mind, the only thing that could restore his own personhood, but for Cassian it was just “another tuesdays”. In the end Revolutions don’t wait for you to make up your mind or for you to come around to realize you are the empire.

    • a similar thing happend with the driver of Mon Mothma, btw.

  • I have seen also libs praising the old man who was against “violent protests” because its an imperial trap and that it should be a lesson to “PSL idiots”. Like Krennic basically made that conference to enforce “yeah we are going to genocide ghorman if we dont find an synthetic alternative”. The death of millions of ghormans (remember it was only 800k who were in the direct way of the mining operation) was already pre-planned, they were just crafting a reason.

No matter how civil the ghor were, they are lambs to the slaughter. Cassian vs Luthen’s fight was about that, Both didnt know that Ghorman was lost either way really, yes, but thematically it was about using that situation to accentuate discontent in the imperial core vs trying to help ghormans survive (which was futile).
