The way the religious government was treated is weird. The really bad parts are treated too nicely and the bad but not remotely as bad as historical examples too harshly. I think it’s because the people like this are doing it for more than just sexual reasons, or if they aren’t, they just don’t care about other people at all. Or it’s because there’s some sort of weird “kink” (I hesitate to even call it that) going around in people with power for genuinely hurting and controlling people, like you said. Like the point isn’t the appearance of the thing or even the actions, but the result of hurting someone else.

yeah. It’s definitely a settler thing, I haven’t heard of many leftists in countries ravaged by imperialism dropping the cause, or at least not nearly as many as the amount of “ex-leftists” in the US.

the criticisms are pretty clear and connected to the identities of the people leveling them. It isn’t just a case of “listen to the minorities”, in this case there is actual theory and ideas connecting complaints and their experiences to those complaints
