Everyone here sorta answers the questions but not entirely. So KDE started back in the 1990s as K Desktop Environment as a play on the Common Desktop Environment. The K was originally suggested as standing for Kool buy I guess others in project didn’t think that was very kool and it was left officially as just K.

As to why Plasma - when KDE 4 was released, “Plasma” replaced Kdesktop shell and whatnot and was named Plasma because plasma evokes dynamic fluidity like plasma or some such lol. Unfortunately I can’t find anything easily on the interwebs that shows how it got it’s name :/

Yes, there are a number of apps (including my example of Meld) that I would install anyway. But a list is nice anyway just so I can curate things the way I like them. :)

Ubuntu is standing on top of Debian’s shoulders then. So is Kali, CrunchBang, MX Linux, Deepin, Rasbian, Tails, etc. Linux Mint is standing on top of Ubuntu’s shoulders which are standing on top of Debian’s shoulders. As is KDE Neon, elementaryOS, Bodhi, Pop!, Zorin, etc. Fedora and RedHat are standing on top of each other’s shoulders. Bazzite, Asahi, Alma, Rocky are standing on their shoulders.

EndeavourOS is also standing on top of Arch’s shoulders. So is Artix, Majaro, Garuda, Archbang and let’s not forget SteamOS.

That’s how FOSS works. And you do realise that it’s not a one way street right? They all contribute up and down stream… because again, that’s how the FOSS community works.

That’s a very cynical take on things :( I’m not sure why the Cachy devs would want to do that when they could just post, “Hey, here’s our distro, come take a look or try it out”. This is a FOSS community and they’re a FOSS product that people make in their spare time, not some huge for-profit trying to squeeze as much out of folks as possible.

I would think a post of me gushing about how I switched to CachyOS after a decade of Arch and how much amazeballs super excellent wonderful blazing fast easy to use easy to install blah blah blah would be more of a red flag than me asking what specific extra packages are installed lol.

Flashing standby light on my monitor drives me nuts let alone the bajillion standby LEDs that would be on in our lounge if we didn’t turn everything off at the wall every night.

Nowadays I feel like people have nuked their sense of smell with fragrance generally. I trip to anyone else’s house and I get headaches from the amount of automatic fragrance despensers, reed diffusers, essential oil atomisers, scented this that and the other on top of bombing themselves with strongly scented body products and sprays.

Also an Arch and KDE user and have been intrigued by Aurora. I tried it on a parents laptop that was getting reformatted and unfortunately it ran really slow and choppy whereas Mint just worked. Curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Deepin was my long running DE for a while until they changed to be more windows like and I ditched it for budgie. Shortlived as it just wasn’t being maintained and updated enough for my liking. Moved to Pantheon for quite a while but it got annoying having to fix it breaking with updates. I ditched it and was ginf to go back once they released the distro agnostic version. I don’t know if that ever eventuated because I gave up waiting and have been happy with KDE for several years now.

Would be interested in this too. Only reason I stopped using Pantheon was because it got too annoying fixing it when it broke with updates and Elementary was behind on making it distro agnostic.

For more storage space yes. We have 2x2TB HDDs in raid atm and a few years ago that cost more than $100 (although I forget the exact amount). I have no doubt they will last long long time (I have a 1TB HDD in my PC that is about 10 years old and still going strong). But we can’t even store all our favourites let alone movies/shows we watch as one offs. So we would need to ‘upgrade’ what we have which we can’t remotely afford because in this country even 2nd hand storage adds up to expensive.

How old are you? I was a kid in the 1980s and most cats I knew as a kid lived till around 18. Oldest cat I can recall was 22. My spouse and I commented recently that it’s weird seeing so many people online these days thinking that a 12-14yo cat was old and wondered what the heck was going on that kitty lifespans have shortened so much from when we were kids (or our own cats). 🙀

Unfortunately not everyone has access to cheap storage so for us a few bucks a month is more cost effective than having to upgrade expensive storage regularly. 😓
