It’s almost like memes are based on context… The reason it’s impactful is because in humans it’s rare to see women be the more powerful sex, it’s rare to see women kill men. Flipping the genders wouldn’t flip the context of the the social norms that the meme is dependent on.

A large aspect of humor is a reverse of expectations. The reason this is funny and the reverse is not is because the meme is the reverse of the social normative of humans. Men kill more women, men are bigger and stronger than women, men have more social power than women.

Your accusations of sexism rings hollow when you actually use logic and apply the situation to the realities of our actual societal structure.

  • Lol, we aren’t going to be mining anything. Rare earth minerals aren’t rare because they’re only located in isolated places, they’re rare because they are only present in small amounts when mining other materials.

The hard part is the refining of rare earth minerals because it requires large investments in refineries to separate the materials and consolidate them. Infrastructure that Ukraine or America haven’t invested in.

The minerals deal is just something that trump can point to as a “win” when in reality it’s not worth anything. Just like everything this administration does, it’s nothing but smoke and mirrors.

  • Yeap, same thing with “find my dream house” shows in America. I think the major difference is that instead of the people being in their 40s, it’s usually people in their 20’s. The source of the funding is ultimately the same, rich parents. The likely difference is between trust fund kids in the US and just people whose parents have finally taken their much awaited dirt naps in the UK.

I think rich parents are basically a prerequisite to owning a home for anyone under 40 nowadays. I’m one of the only people in my friend group of people in their late 30s who owns a home, and that was due to what I consider a minor miracle.

I was lucky and bought an abandoned house from the bank for 30k after the last recession, and that was only possible because I got a loan I probably shouldn’t have qualified for through USAA. So, still a bit of nepotism, but because my dad was in the service, not because he was wealthy.

  • I build and fit orthotics and prosthetics…this is mainly just a marketing gimmick. The myoelectric sensors that feed the data to the terminal device are built into the socket of the prosthetic. There’s no real reason to wear the socket without the hand, and you can’t operate the hand without the socket.

The hard connections from the end of the socket and the hand are very durable, and they typically don’t really have any issues with wear. I don’t think fidelity is a big issue because there’s not a ton of information being transferred, the myoelectric sensors haven’t really changed a bunch in the last 40 years and the amount of information being sent is minimal.

The biggest downside I foresee is that if you had different terminal devices, you’re probably going to have to pair them to the socket whenever you want to switch. When the traditional hard connection is just plug and play. That and you are just adding extra things to break in devices that are built to take a beating.

  • I mean, this has basically been a constant since the advent of capitalism. There’s a reason why a “Company” has things like a “Chief Executive Officer”, some of the very first corporations were literally mercenary groups who organized their hierarchical structures off of the military.

Kinda why I think an-caps and libertarians are idiotic. Like how do you think corporations aren’t capable of invalidating your rights? They’re literally structured from militaristic organizations…

  • Really unlikely… It would be hard to miss a shattered tibia if you are already placing hardware in the fibula. Orthopedic surgery isn’t really a gentle process, you are usually really moving the limb around a lot and limbs get really floppy when you have unsupportive fractures.

Plus, all hardware is tagged and tracked before, throughout, and after the operation. Mistakes happen, but it usually involves accidentally leaving a foreign body, and usually involves supplies that aren’t specific to the individual surgery like gauze, sponges, or clamps.

  • First of all, there’s not a lot of orthopedic surgery going on in rural medicine. Secondly, one of my first jobs as a provider involved traveling to provide specialty care to rural clinics and native reservations in one of the poorer states in the union.

You are correct that rural medicine is on the struggle bus, especially in states like mine that refused to expand Medicaid coverage…but your observation just doesn’t really apply to this particular case.

And we are unfortunately vulnerable to regression. It’s sad to think that if Mr Rogers was around today his show would probably be attached to an executive order to have his funding cut.

I don’t know if a similar show would be influential in today’s media market. Not just because it would be considered “woke” by half the population, but because the content would be like watching paint dry for a lot of kids.

I think a big part of learning empathy is wrapped up in learning how to be patient, and how to appreciate someone’s company enough to allot them your time and attention. I just don’t think people value patience very much anymore and wonder if our media reflects that or it’s vice versa.
