3 months ago@cm0002 This is the peak “modern tech journalism” — don’t mention really interesting changes like changes in pkgbase or new drivers in title, but mention minor and less interesting* change from blacklistd to blocklistd.
* For people outside USA, and not with English mother tongue, and not deeply rooted in the USA politics — English IT related words used just as a technical terms, “as is” without any etymological research. Like a blacklist or master Git branch. I pretty sure that the same terms from Russian language, like “sputnik”, also are used “as is” without any overthinking — that “sputnik” means not only a “satellite”, but also has an older meanings: “companion”, “fellow traveler”, etc.
@wyatt @cm0002 I think, that e.g. for people not living under democracy (like me) these changes in words looks like the well-known orwellian “newspeak”.
We already saw (or know from the history) that the same “wordplay” was used to mask some behavior, not welcomed by regime. And the same things, happening with the well-known field of our work/hobby — obviously raising the questions: are the IT/FOSS adopts practices from oppressive regimes now? Ofc people don’t want their beloved FOSS to became a new “Big Brother” and become mad about it, I think.
Here the some lines, which I can draw for now. IRL here the word “explosion” isn’t using in the media, to “calm down the citizens” — instead of it the words “bang/clap” are in use. In the IT the same: the words “master” or “backlist” aren’t in use, instead of it the words “main” or “blocklist” are in use to “calm down some minorities”.
IRL each one (including the readers) knows that this wordplay means and that “clap” in the media means that something exploded somewhere. And this substitution was made not because some literary demands. Same in the IT — everyone (except maybe juniors) knows that “master” is a name of a branch in the Git, and this substitution was made not because of some technical demands.
IRL if you speak something wrong, then the authorities will come to you and will prosecute you. Fortunately, in IT/FOSS there are no authorities, but some self-proclaimed “authorities” also will try to come to you and mob you (successfully, if you live in western society and concern and unsuccessfully if you live in the other world or give zero fucks).
