3·20 hours agoUse a Yubikey. It’s a small USB Device you can put on a keychain. It is still a second device, but it’s not your phone. And you always have your keys with you, anyway.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•How To Opt Out Of Your Car’s Surveillance State (Before It’s Too Late)English
2·20 hours agoI want to have my cake and eat it too, though (privacy plus electric).
I’m looking at the new electric Slate pickup. As far as I can tell, this is the one EV that might not spy on us.

Ask Science@lemmy.world•What is the endgame of bio diversity?English
1·4 days agoThere’s no conscious goal to biodiversity. But over time, life will grow and reproduce to harvest as much of the universe’s energy as possible and make as many copies of itself as possible.
Think bacteria on a petri dish, humans on the earth, and really, all living material in the universe.

5·1 month agoI recently read (listened to the audiobook actually) Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.
It’s about the life of Thomas Cromwell. The narration style is not for everyone, but it’s the best historical fiction story I’ve read.

2·1 month agoChildren of Time is great. I also thought Alien Clay by Tchaikovsky was interesting. Although I’m a little skeptical about how aliens work in that one.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Dev Says He’s Getting Threats After Leaving a Booby Trap for Vibe Coders
51·1 month agoFuck billionaires.
They’re the ones who will profit from using AI to rewrite open source projects or to fire a bunch of developers.
Actions (prompt injections, boycotts, regulation, etc.) have to target billionaires above all or we’ll end up fighting amongst ourselves, as usual.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•[OC] The small pleasures of life (overtaking dozens of cars stuck in traffic)English
20·1 month agoI love to see bikes overtaking cars.
I hate to see bikes not stopping and yielding to pedestrians using the crosswalk when pedestrians have the right of way.

science@lemmy.world•Surprising Finding in the Eye May Explain How We See in Low LightEnglish
1·3 months agoThe idea that there’s cross talk between rod and cone dominated pathways has been understood for years.
But the technique they used requires a lot of skill and the study sounds very impressive.
Exactly.
I hate posts like this. If people on the left could unite against capitalist billionaires we would stand a chance.
Instead, we attack each other while they laugh all the way to the bank.

6·3 months agoWow, it was tough to watch that whole video. I hope things have improved since then, although I’m sure in a lot of places they haven’t.
Eat less meat and if you do eat meat, pay extra for pasture raised animal products.

and the original European names are also pretty functional:
I believe Amsterdam is just “River Dam”
And York is just “Yew”, presumably named after trees that grew there. (Eburacon -> Eboracum -> Eoforwic -> Jórvík -> York)
But New York in the United States isn’t even directly named after the English city of York, but rather a person (James Stuart) who was the Duke of York when England took control of the territory from the Dutch.
