Sorry to hear about her grandmother. It’s typically not fun going to funerals, and it sucks to feel bad when feeling good or even just level is hard to do these days. This isn’t an answer to your question, but rather a “I think I understand how you feel, sorta” thing. This empathy you speak of is why I couldn’t end up going to one of my best friend’s funeral today (…aside from the fact that it’s a very expensive plane ride away). I would likely fall apart if I was around his family, and that feels weird for me because I never met them. His dad reached out to me to tell me the sad news, and while I’m still devastated and processing it all, I don’t know exactly why I feel uncomfortable with going. Maybe it would hurt more, dunno. Sorry, friend.

I love this and have felt kinship with my fellow lifeforms for many years. It’s so amazing to see others waking up to this long-held acknowledgement and appreciation for every being around the globe. While I wasn’t necessarily taught this, I feel this is the kind of mindset necessary to teach our children as early as possible because it fosters empathy and awareness, as the article says, that can carry through a lifetime.

It’s also a sign of people everywhere championing the truth. This gives me hope!

Is there any chance that the flight recorder being sent to the US could be intercepted by B0eing and “scrubbed” for any info that implicates them? Kind of a weird worry, but these days I expect all manner of crazy to transpire.

I’m still sick to my stomach over the murder of Tortuguita, and every wrongful death, arrest, and demonization campaign of people that are doing what’s right for the public good. All I can give is my utmost support and adoration for those defending our rights as humans on this planet, and for our environment. Despite this, I know good will continue to propagate and prevail. We know we are gaining momentum when they start with these bullshit tactics. I’ll be here, practicing radical hope.

Can’t help but praise all the journalists and whistleblowers in history and now that have met their demise by speaking truth to power and lifting the veil of untruth for people to see. That which is done in the dark will eventually come to the light. The sacrifice made by those that do this work for the public good are a beacon of hope for me, and they have my respect and thanks. Now it’s about strength in numbers…

For sure this is happening at the federal level, but it certainly isn’t happening at all state levels. Grant funding from states doesn’t necessarily follow what the federal programs are doing so there is hope depending on where you are (…this is so unfortunate to say in itself).

I’m grateful for this resource. It’s so important to catalog this and teach others how to combat racism that permeates all of daily life in those places. I’m glad to see there are fewer sundown towns as time progresses, but even one is too many.

Slightly on topic, but I finally read all of the great content you have for the FAQ, etc. and I just want to say thank you for this space. There’s so much to love about this community, and I have a stronger affinity for Beehaw and the vision you and the mods have created here knowing more about the history of how it began and what you hope to create with this platform. Research in this field is only going to get more precise so long as public interest and demand remains. The best part about studying atmospheric phenomena is that we learn about systems that affect huge swaths of the earth, so it benefits everyone to be able to predict them. As we saw with Hurricane Helene (just looking at a recent US storm for example), weather events are only going to be more unpredictable as climate change accelerates, and the supply chain is affected by every one of these storms each time, not to mention the untold damage to the entire area. As long as we continue to stay on top of learning, we can update our climatological models and thus forecasts for weather. It’s still less expensive overall to act and adapt rather than not.

I’m in a between place emotionally. Animal family member passed away recently. We knew it was coming but some irrational part of me thought he would be around forever, but he was in a lot of pain from some cancerous tumors that kept popping up, and he was not walking or moving well, incontinence, etc. I’m grateful he’s not in pain, but he was so damn loved and will always be a legendary pupper.

Landlord is selling our place as well and I’m super not into being under the thumb of another landlord, so I’m doing the scary thing - looking for houses.

Then there’s HR 9495 in the US Congress… This proposed bill in Congress could destroy so many sectors that rely on non-profits to protect the community, and not only is this a Pandora’s Box of fuckery, but there are untold ramifications. If you feel like telling your Democratic reps you do not support this bill, all the help is appreciated.

Finally, on a lighter note, I love and appreciate this community! I read everyone’s comments on these posts and appreciate posts like this. It’s a scary time ahead for many in our country and the world, but there are so many glimmers of hope that come from just having this platform for human discussions. Thank you for this, and sending love and kindness to everyone in their unique struggles. Know that you are cared for, and there are still far more good and genuine people in the world than bad.

This is one of the most awful environmental disasters. Some of that footage is really valuable. I’m so sad that the residents have yet to receive justice, and they likely won’t ever truly be made whole again.

With so much division at the federal level, it’s “nice” to see governors reaching out to each other like this. Maybe if they learn anything from this exercise, it’ll be reflected as more sound protections for their constituents in the form of bolstering pro-union, pro-solidarity grassroots movements.
