  • Chuds like to imagine their home being “invaded” because of the violence they would feel entitled to stretching forward and back in time.

I like to imagine a very confused person surrounded by old books, a bunch of half done projects, obviously worthless tech… It would be fun to see someone try to rob me, it would be like a kind of game show, bizaro Price is Right. “What can I sell for drugs today?” if they think they need all those vintage zines and pamphlets more than me, maybe they do. I really.don’t know what gets tossed in the pillowcase.

  • Key thing about the FBI was that is was run by a fairly openly (for the time) gay man for majority of its existence, specifically during this time when the dynamics were being entrenched.

Not about hating homosexuality, it’s about control and power. Creating a premise on which to blackmail people not out of vigilance against intrusion, but so they could weild over others. Sex of any sort is OK as long as in reinforces hireachy.

  • “The whole point of the office is that Michael Scott is a boob,” Wilson said, adding that he and his character, Dwight Schrute, lack “self-awareness.”

Never watched this show because I always had the impression it was exactly as described above. It is such a boring joke, I was already tired of it just from hearing about it second hand. The premise that everything white men do is sooo inherently interesting. That their nastiness should be laughed off as though it was nothing and of no consequence.

People watching and identifying with characters like these get to feel smug and self satisfied because they are able to understand the foibles and fumbles on the screen. As it has been carefully fed to them like prechewed worms to a baby bird; but the flavor is satisfying and they imagine themselves having done the worm hunting.

Not just lack of self awareness, bit lack of situational and relational awareness. But the underlying joke is that some people can get away with it, and actually it is kind of endearing when they trash around smacking other people without even noticing.

“We milked that for a lot of great, really inappropriate stuff,” Wilson continued. “But even with the fact that painting that character as just an idiot, I don’t think you could get away with it today.”

Boo hoo so sad. Why print this whiny complaints. “Oh nobody thinks I’m funny anymore which must be a sign of declining intellect of everybody else. I deserve positive attention!! People should never stop praising me for my single premise joke that I have been doing for years.”

And there was just a new Office spin off released like a year ago.

  • Commissioner Alister Martin: “It’s incredibly important that we get the messaging right here and that we lean in on the comms and the campaign here

“We will spread lies and confusion.”

A couple of weeks ago in CO the SC ruled you can’t discriminate due to cowardice:

The court found that the actual harm to transgender youth far outweighed the hospital’s speculative fears

holding that a “reluctant” act of discrimination compelled by a “third party” remains discrimination under Colorado law. With the decision, Children’s Hospital Colorado joins a growing number of hospitals, including Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego and Children’s Minnesota, that have moved to restore gender-affirming care after initially halting it under federal pressure. The ruling also answers the question many public officials have been grappling with in terms of state anti-discrimination law: whether vague federal threats, unaccompanied by any law or court order, are enough to nullify a state’s civil rights protections. The Colorado Supreme Court’s answer was firmly: no.

It’s different because it concerns stopping an existing program instead of starting a new one.

However if the administration has directly stated their reason is fear of federal retribution via other funding, then they have supplied evidence of discrimination.

  • It’s like cat people and dog people. There are kinda material reasons to be one over the other. Some dogs are ostensibly for security. Cats don’t need to be walked every day, or go outside at all, so they accommodate different lifestyles. Fancy dog breeds incur huge vet costs due to their bodies being shaped by the whims of humans playing god. Cats can suck the breath out of a baby.

Not all people are cat or dog people. Some people have neither. They might support a “third pet” like rats or parrots. Abstaining from pets is very common, due to apathy, ideology or gerrymandering. All of these are impacted by materials situation. But a lot of it is just how you grew up. Who you fell in with. Your partner has a dog, you live together, so now you have a dog.

Some people have strong opinions on cats vs dogs. They can come into conflict in apartment living, designating precious urban space for dog parks, a few bad apple cats murdering every bird in a 2 block radius. There are cities where dogs roam in packs, others where cats rule.

For the most part, cat people and dog people live in peace. They contribute to each other by supporting vets and businesses which cater to both of them, so those business are viable. Animal welfare laws, registration programs, and norms regarding treatment benefit both. Resources like animal shelters are shared. And the concept of animal companionship, is normalized. Most people don’t care if you are a cat person, dog person, both, neither.

  • Having lived/worked in different environments with more homogenous or heterogenous cultural makeup, a lot of this depends on everyone having the same expectation. One reason why places like US have less (I think) is just that people are aware they can’t predict anyone else’s expectations or reactions. Anybody who comes from a culture of bribe or gift giving will soon get embarrassed when they attempt to do things in the normal way and the intended recipient reacts surprised, offended, maybe even reports them for bad behavior! but within these communities, bribes or gifts maybe still be expected if they can be done without attracting attention.

People give gifts of objects and consumables in addition to cash. And if the recipient is acculturated to it, these are warmly appreciated and do result in better treatment in the future. For example my friend works as an admin who controls access to stuff and the people who bring treats (especially from the preferred bakery, or quality home made) get the high preference. She can tell me about 10 years ago when this person brought a wonderful pie or something and has been forever blessed. A different person, different culture, might consider it rude for a stranger to bring food to them.

You might think, a pie is one thing, who cares about a pie. But sometimes there is jewelry, or free services at client businesses, gift cards, borrow the vacation home for the weekend, etc. There is no reason to expect cash would never be involved.

Another thing that isn’t quite a bribe but is barely hidden is when the person has some sort of charity/church or side business you can donate to or patronize. Like if I also paint nails, I tell people about it at work and it can become known that whoever gets me to do their nails (and tips well) will get the most help. Or if you are contacting is, it’ll help if you get some ancillary service or supplies from this business my family runs. Otherwise you might find yourself at the bottom of the list forever…

I think to some extent this is natural and human. See Debt by David graeber. But problem is, where is the line and how to enforce it. I wouldnt mind living in a world of small token gifts to acknowledge the value of other people. This is how some people adapt. I know someone who has many clients from a culture where it is mandatory to bring substantial gifts when obtaining the service he provides. My friend finds this unseemly and icky. There has arisen agreement that he will graciously accept cheap token gifts from his customers, a small fraction of the monetary value they want to give. But it still let’s the ritual of gift giving be preserved.
