Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If a Great Depression happened again, would people still stand together like they did during the penny auctions?
21·16 days agoI would imagine they just auction them on online nowadays :/ cutting out any sort of human interaction.

News@lemmy.world•Live Updates: Manhunt Continues for Killer of Charlie Kirk, Charismatic Right-Wing Activist
24·2 months agoHow is there not tons of images of the suspect not being pushed to public yet. There had to have been multiple security cameras on them at the time. Seems like they are waiting to find the “suspect” that will do the most damage to the left as possible.
Any idea of what they are looking into? I always thought neutron detectors were for detection of nuclear activity.

Technology@lemmy.world•Inside the Underground Trade of ‘Flipper Zero’ Tech to Break into CarsEnglish
31·3 months agoI dont want to be too specific, there is a reason, I work with radio infrastructure quite a bit. A lot of these systems hide behind obscurity alone. Not great against national actors that may want to do harm.

Steam Deck@sopuli.xyz•Is the Steam Deck still worth it in 2025? I'd argue yes — but with caveats
2·3 months agoNvidia 3060 on a windows 11 machine with Sunshine (Free, open source iirc). Set the resolution to 1280x800, pretty easy to run just about anything at max settings at that resolution. Pretty simple and I like having pirated games on another machine than my daily driver.
Moonlight installed on Steamdeck.
A nice wifi router is ideal, I recently got a Unify 7 Acess Point that has made the experience much better. Still worked decent on a 5ghz access point.
I have streamed from internet as well, even mobile Hotspot. Not great for fast twitchy games where timing is key, games like baldergs gate are great.
Love that you want to do it on linux, it has come a long way since the steam deck. Sunshine has linux installers as well. Nvidia video card drivers are the biggest hiccup I usually have with linux gaming/llms.

10·3 months agoI use it to stream from a gaming PC, super long battery life and no loud fan. Amazing way to use the deck.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do so many conservatives in the US bash on California all the time?
1·3 months agoTotally agree, both sides are made to keep us content. You are right that we need to be vigilant of both narratives.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do so many conservatives in the US bash on California all the time?
102·3 months agoI would guess most midwesterners have not been, so they dont know the reality of the place. So anyone can say it’s full of bad people and they won’t bat an eye.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are the next steps I need to do to publish a paper somewhere like arXiv?
4·4 months agoMake it easy to understand and repeatable. If you do not have the education credentials, it may take a little more finesse. Finding a conference is a great idea. Make some personal contacts with someone putting on a workshop. Depending on the field, they may be in need of papers. I am happy to help with any questions on the overall process or formatting. I have a published paper, so I have an idea of some of the struggles. My wife has put on many workshops in the AI field and is often complaining of how hard it is to find quality content to have presented.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do you think my co-worker will hear about this?
3·5 months agoAs I get older, I learn that not giving a fuck a out what others think is a solid strategy. Not sure my OCD and ADD can ever fully let me do that, but I am trying.
Always a chance this was a perfect ice breaker to bring your relationship together. Even if it isn’t a love interest, just getting a chance to solidify a stronger human relationship is great for everyone.
And hey, if love interest does come out of it, you dont have to worry about downstairs anymore, she knows the inventory and still wanted to greet you with a smile.

I keep a small sized notebook with the first page or so an index of sort, and then a page for each service or server. Doesn’t have to be a lot, but be sure to give your future self all the info that will be needed. For instance not just a password, but also the username. Any problems you have had and how you resolved it. Depending on the sophistication of your network, vlans, firewall info, is it wired to your router or switch, what port. What slot of your multi button power bar it is plugged into, so if you need to cut power or restart you dont have e to randomly push switch accidently turning something else off. Basic server specs, what type/size of raid or HDs, do you have room for more HDs later, RAM slots and what’s in them currently.
I might get some flack from writing down passwords, but a password manager can remedy that. I still keep some of mine on paper tbh, I have had pw managers break or go offline and I am not terribly worried about normal theifs knowing how to ssh into my linux boxes.
