Came across a printer that had the hp instant ink cartridge installed. It will only print with the subscription. They had it, but it was not enrolled. So do the enrollment, which requires you to print and scan a page for some reason. Guess what, can’t print out the enrollment as it has an instant ink cartridge in.

Worth running them through musicbrainz Picard scanner. I think most from that era will have a signature added to he db. (Assuming you’ve not tried this.)

13·11 days agoI recently came across a windows 7 machine that someone wanted updated. First thing I did was clone it to an SSD.
Wow I forgot how fast windows 7 boots with one. That was even still on the old hardware.
In the end it was only one piece of software that you could get online, so we went with the fresh install.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Microsoft's Attempts to Sell AI Agents Are Turning Into a Disaster
4·13 days agoI noticed that power automate was lumped into the agents section. So mainly went with the disable 3rd party settings. Since you know, that’s enabled by default like a bunch of other settings.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•People in the UK watching the world use the internet
7·19 days agoI’m not convinced this is the reason for the Imgur block. They were asked by the UK about how they processed the data for minors at the start of the year. They refused to provide it, and were then fined. When the age check was implemented I think they used that as an excuse to block the UK, so they “weren’t operating in it” and didn’t need to answer the questions.
The UK gov disagrees with that and is planning more legal action iirc.
If they had done the block without that law, people would be asking why they were not revealing how they process data of minors.
I used ublockorigin to block the container for shorts and news. Much better, also set up a redirector that changes shorts URLs into the normal yt format, so that you don’t pulled into that feed.

3·21 days agoTechnically it was just only recently that ms no longer has mainstream support for 32bit oses, as they only dropped that with windows 11.
Makes me think that might be the reason for valve choosing now to do this.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•What are some of the worst code you have seen in a production environment?
6·22 days agoOk so this one is someone trying to move to “the cloud.”
They had a database they used. It was on a server in the office. We were tasked to clone the db server to a hosted VM. Due to order of creation this got put on a new host without anything yet on it.
They needed a site to site VPN to keep privacy, that was all fine. However after the clone and during testing, their guy there said that this one part was really slow. We take a look and everything is good with performance of the server and of the VPN. I have to pop on to take a look.
It was in an office app and written in VB. (I forgot which one.) It was indeed slower on the hosted server. So I took a look at the function (he got it up for me) and I could instantly tell the issue.
This part was a lookup page that searched for you input. The function retrieved the entire table, then filtered the results in the client. I explained that transferring the whole table over the internet would be slower than on the local lan.
This guy said he originally wrote this, but “forgot VB.”
In the end they decided not to update the app or keep the server in the office, but instead they rented some VDIs in the same data centre as the db.

14·23 days agoWhat I find strange is in cases where I can say: “sorry that is not that good of a deal, you should spend twice that and get this instead as it is a good deal.” They always just ignore your advice.
I sometimes find people already bought it. They only wanted my opinion if it agreed with them.
