  • Right, you’ll remain “blissfully unaware”, how very convenient of you to not be brown, female, or LGBT. Those people and the people who care about them cannot afford to be “blissfully unaware”. Once they’re out of the way and things start impacting you personally then you’ll start to care. By then it will be so far past too late that “too late” isn’t even visible over the horizon anymore.

These things are already impacting you now, you’re just refusing to see it. We are at a point where we cannot progress without collective action. We cannot achieve collective action without a modicum of people looking out their window and seeing what’s going on outside. That’s all I ask of anyone.

This isn’t out of my system, it isn’t going to be out of my system until my nation and preferably the rest of the world is no longer being overrun with fascists. I obviously care about this a lot more than you do and that’s fine. I’m not asking you to get out and march in the streets. I’m asking you (and not necessarily you in particular, I’m asking everyone) to please lose this flippant “I don’t care about politics” attitude because it is getting our nation ruined and it is going to get your neighbors killed. I have family and friends and coworkers that are afraid for their lives and livelihoods right now. This isn’t something I’m just going to “get out of my system” by being condescended to.

  • Probably because it concerns the literal fate of the fucking world and is something that people have a responsibility to give a shit about. People refusing to pay attention to politics is how we got in this mess in the first place. It is more important now than maybe ever before.

Or, well, it was, round a year or so ago. These days, yeah, might as well just check out, it’s probably not getting any better from here. You missed the boat for that.

People can’t help but weigh in with their opinions because you’re loud and proud about shirking your responsibility as a citizen while the rest of us watch our nation collapse around our ears primarily because of uninformed or apathetic voters just like you.

I don’t want to have to care about politics any more than you do but in our current times we all must care about politics. You don’t have to get so riled up about it that you agitate your heart problems, but you do have a responsibility to fill out a ballot as well as to be informed before you mark that ballot.

I don’t think that you are a bad person, but I do think your demographic is as much to blame as the actual fascists for the problems we face today. I’m sorry to break that to you in such a fashion. If we are allowed another free election in our lifetime, because that is now in question, please pay attention to it.

  • Oblique angles on all possible bulkheads, and probably the biggest fuck-you electromagnet the military can strap onto a ship.

The way I understand it, a railgun slug by definition of the way a railgun works is required to be made of ferrous metal. We can use that to defend against it. A quarter second blip of extreme magnetism may be able to repel the bullet (or, alternatively, attract it off course from the main body of the ship). You’ll EMP the shit out of anything on board, but eh, you can harden against that if you know it’s coming.

Only other solution I can think of off hand is slagging the incoming round with laser fire but I have trouble believing you’d be able to detect, target, and vaporize an incoming railgun round in the amount of time you have between detection and impact. Those suckers move fast. Average result feels like it would be, congrats, you weren’t hit by a railgun round, but you have been hit by ten pounds of liquid metal moving at nearly relativistic speeds. Potato potato.

Though, with the magnetic defense, the logical next step here is to develop a sort of ferrous sabot round that can accelerate the (non ferrous) payload and then release it to then completely not give any shits about further magnets. You pull that off and your opponent will have to rely on a laser intercept system or similar, and then - yeah, basically, whoever shoots first wins.

There’s a lot to be said for good armor with good oblique angles though. Deflecting force is always going to be easier than absorbing it. If you can arrange to never give your enemy a good shot at a good flat plane, they’ll have a lot harder time penetrating your armor no matter how fast their shots are going. This won’t save you all the time but it’ll do a lot more than you’d probably expect.
