Green Energy@slrpnk.net•California zeroes out funding for world’s ‘largest virtual power plant’
4·4 months agoDive Brief:
- California lawmakers approved a sweeping energy package at the end of the legislative session that does not include funding to continue two grid reliability programs, including a virtual power plant advocates believe is the largest in the world.
- Earlier this year, the state faced a $12 billion budget shortfall, and the two programs were in limbo for months as legislators negotiated down to the wire. The bills awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature after the session closed Saturday include proposals aimed at bringing down energy costs, expanding the Western grid and codifying virtual power plants in longterm planning.
- Advocates say gutting the Demand Side Grid Support and Distributed Electricity Backup Assets programs threatens to undermine the state’s progress toward a more resilient grid that can respond to system stress by calling on batteries, electric vehicles, rooftop solar panels, smart thermostats and other energy resources that are increasingly common in homes, businesses and institutions.

zerowaste@slrpnk.net•What to do with a hotwired fridge (no thermostat) -- make it a wine cooler, beer fridge, or what?
4·4 months agoYou could even use the ‘smart’ temp sensor and plug to power it on when the temp rises above the desired value, but probably won’t be buyable in your local hardware store… Also, R-134a and other refridgerants are vety potent greenhuse gases, so maybe don’t release that…

fixing@slrpnk.net•My Zanussi fridge must be junked because (IIUC) a simple relay switch went bad? Are my resistance readings good? Is there such a thing as a universal fridge switch?
2·5 months agoHi! https://www.manualslib.com/download/662200/Zanussi-Zfc19-4d.html Here you can download the manual I didn’t manage to find the relay, I only found one place that has the thermostat: https://fixpart.co.uk/product/electrolux-aeg-50206930005-thermostat?apl=082057 I’m not sure to what degree it helps, but if your problem with acquiring a part is geographical in nature I’m in Ireland, and am happy to get and mail the part for you if it is available in either EU or the UK. Good luck and keep us posted!

Blades In The Dark@ttrpg.network•How to handle running Blades in setting with different species/ancestries/races
1·5 months agoSoooooo, hopefully it is still relevant to anyone, since I just found this post and actually have something :D What I would do (and probably will in the future, since I have a setting idea that would involve this), is to take a look at the special rules that exist right now for not-exactly-human player entities: ghosts, hulls and vampires.
I am personally looking at hulls, and how having a different hull size changes starting features, but also the way vampire feeding works… Hope this helps and can’t wait to hear about what you came up with, since the post is two years old hahaha 😅

Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Want to plant trees to offset fossil fuels? You’d need all of North and Central America, study finds6·7 months agoNo, I want to plant trees because it helps to have a resilient ecosystem that’s more safe in case of a cascade collapse. I want to plant trees because they provide shade in the summer. Because they improve the soil. Because they help prevent floods. Because they give birds food and shelter. Because they are fucking PRETTY.
Can we start thinking about the whole thing instead of acting as if i single problems that are not interconnected?
Plant some fucking trees, even if they are not just carbon sequestration batteries.

Fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Smol fedi - how I think fediverse should workEnglish
2·7 months agoHi!
because it’s how you show people “you don’t need to subject yourself to the whims of a Nazi billionaire or the greedy pigboy aping him”.
I still think it’s better done on the case-by-case, and instance basis, as mentioned, Don’t talk about fediverse was realy meant as a provocation (and it’s working :P), I just think we would do better shifting the topic of conversation from technicals and infrastructure and apis to communities and content, because to be honest I believe it is already here.
I think it’s important to be aware of a few options, and be able to answer questions about apps, but I fully agree we shouldn’t advertise the Fediverse based on apps. Specially since you can always check the content without one, even from a phone.
💯 Absolutely. Apps are amazing, but people don’t want the app because it is shiny, but because of what it can give them. Community, topics, ‘content’.
people eventually migrate from the general purpose instances to more specific ones, as they find their own homes here.
I believe it is already happening, honestly, and I love it!

1·7 months agoHonestly? It is not a problem I have, and I’m really happy about that :P But yes, I think it’s very handy to have a quick reply like that, but as you probably already suspect, I avoid general meta topics like that, simply because I don’t really have much interest in Reddit itself :)

2·7 months agoYes, apps are awesome way of interacting with the community! But I agree with @some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org that we would do better showing people what’s up before asking them to download an app and make an account :)
