I got the reddit block about a week ago, so I’ve given this place another try (first tried it after the reddit API fiasco). I would like lemmy if it were more active. I mostly used reddit for news headlines, and I haven’t found any communities here that are nearly as quick for breaking news and whatnot. I feel like my head has been buried in the ground since leaving Reddit. Still not going back though.

I just got here a couple days ago because Reddit makes me log in to browse and I’m not cool with that. And… holy shit. I don’t know what this has been about but that guy needs to go outside. You all need to go outside. I need to go outside too. Ultimately, I’m disappointed because I guess I have no place to go after reddit.

If you boot from a live CD, are you able to mount the drive?

Also, out of curiosity, is Windows on a separate physical disk than Linux? Or is it one disk partitioned for both?

Because the argument is specifically driverless cars vs trains

A larger reason (though not nearly the only one) was Beverly Hills lobbying against the influx of homeless people it would be bringing in. Not to mention all the permits, beaurocracy and difficulty of burrowing beneath an active city. But sure! Whatever the reason, trains aren’t gonna extend themselves in the time I can hail a very real Waymo.

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice. I bike or take the train to any destination that is practical to do so. But what isn’t practical is screaming “fuck cars,” especially Waymo – an electric car that takes me safely and directly to my destination – in a city where the only other options are pies in skies.

Meanwhile people mock a fabricated Chinese social credit system that doesn’t exist (I know – I’ve lived there)

I’m glad you have enjoyed it as a career. I never even tried – I have a dumb rule that I won’t do anything I truly love for work. I guess because I don’t want others ruining it. lol

That’s an excellent point. With my larger personal projects, which I have to put away for weeks at a time due to my (not-at-all-programming) job, I can come back and (more or less) dive right back in because I used patterns and organizational structures familiar to me. And if I’m digging into a particular thing, I can eventually remember all the trials and tribulations that went into the decisions I made to get to that point.

With AI code you get none of that, like you said. I can’t imagine not knowing or understanding why something works the way it does, and releasing it, with my name on it, for others to use.

Been coding for about 30 years now, am I the only one who still LIKES to code? Who still LIKES to try writing a new approach to something, watching it fail, figuring out what went wrong, taking notes, learning from mistakes, and noticing improvements in their own code? Cuz it’s starting to feel like it. Web development already lost me with the culture of “glue a bunch of bulky shit together that you didn’t write and call yourself a ‘dev’ to the ladies” but this AI shit is getting absurd. And it doesn’t even work! Look at how shitty all the operating systems are getting. Look at all the total slop on the app stores. It’s depressing as hell.
