Cool, we remember - now what? What do we materially do now to resist that isn’t just blaming non-voters online?

ofc not - but don’t delude yourself that Harris would have either - you don’t defeat genocide at the polls - get organized instead - https://generalstrikeus.com/
That’s fair - I guess that’s why I said “it seems” as I can’t confidently state something whose unknowns I don’t fully understand.
But yeah theoretically there might be a way to compress the final output into a physically possible form. Still considering the magnitude of the numbers we’re talking about - this would still be a mind boggling undertaking.
I guess my point was more around elmo confidently stating that chess is solvable and using the actual complexity of the task as a way to highlight how being that confident in such a statement is absurd.
Then again maybe I fell in a similar trap so thanks for pointing it out!
I just want to focus on this extremely ridiculous quote as if one understands how unfathomably silly it is - it becomes impossible to take anything elmo says seriously (not that you should need more proof)
What elmo is trying to talk about is called game-tree complexity - the number of possible games based on the number of possible moves.
For checkers this is 10^54 - massive but obviously computable (took 18 years and finished in 2007)
For chess this is 10^120 - called the Shannon number is unimaginably large - like if we counted it in Planck times (smallest unit of time) - checkers’ number would convert to about 300 years - chess on the other hand comes out to around 10^58 universe ages
What’s more - there’s about 10^80 atoms in the universe - so it’s physically impossible to store that many game states in a usable manner to compute a full solution of chess.
Even giving him the biggest benefit of the doubt and turning the whole observable universe into a black hole (the most information dense object imaginable) the Bekenstein bound still dictates you only have 10^96 bits to work with - so it’s seems totally impossible to store a full solution of chess in our universe.
Overall this proves the point of this post - elmo literally does not believe he lives in the real world and any proof otherwise will get rejected by his solipsistic brain.
The AfD is currently polling in second place on around 20% ahead of parliamentary elections on February 23.
This sounds bad. Like I know voting is for suckers but let’s not make it easy for the neo-nazis to just waltz into power…
If you’re looking for the second best time to take action - it’s right now!
nazis got fucked once - and we’ll keep fucking them up as many times as is needed
A-are you actually comparing Elvis conspiracies with racial supremacy? Sounds like your logic doesn’t go further than “freedom of speech = good”
You say rights exist until they encroach on others’ freedoms. But promoting ideas of racial supremacy directly encroaches on others’ basic freedoms and safety. By your own logic, those views forfeit their protection.
You argue it’s important to demonstrate opposition to harmful views. That’s exactly what content moderation is - society collectively demonstrating opposition to ideas that threaten democratic values and human dignity.
You claim repression breeds hate and echo chambers. But platforming hate speech (by claiming they’re something to be “debated”) creates echo chambers of hatred and drives away the very people you claim should be engaging in debate. Your approach actually reduces genuine dialogue.
You reference people being killed for scientific beliefs. But you’re comparing the persecution of evidence-based scientific inquiry to the restriction of propaganda designed to harm others. These aren’t remotely equivalent - you’re actually trivializing historical persecution.
You’re basically saying “we must protect Alice’s right to a safe home by platforming Bob’s right to debate burning it down.”
Also your whole “But people who know better are also free to debate them - and prove them wrong” - completely disregards the physical reality of the burden of proof - it takes 0 effort to say “yggstyle hates people of color and that’s why they argue for people to have the freedom to say anything” - and now it’s on you to prove me wrong - but every time you spend time trying I’ll just claim a new ridiculous thing - absolute “freedom of speech” is a godsend for bad faith actors.
I hope you can see why this rhetoric is bullshit and why people should not support anybody’s “freedom of speech” to debate people’s rights to exist.
Meanwhile, the Houthis have lobbed repeated attacks at lsrael, as wellI as U.S. warships operating in the Red Sea, raising fears that one may make it through and endanger the lives of American service members.
“Won’t somebody think of the US war machine??”
Fair, I can understand how it came across that way - I didn’t mean to blame anyone but the DNC for losing an election by not doing the one thing most of their voters wanted them to do.
This doesn’t need to turn into a pissing contest as I see you care about the Palestinian cause.
I too have spent countless hours protesting on the ground, being threatened and followed by police, helping comrades deal with the abysmal legal system and some other things I don’t feel comfortable admitting on a public forum - but I don’t see this as justification to blame others for the voting choices they’ve made - I’ve used my privilege to help as much as I can - not because that allows me to “berate people on the internet for not caring as much” but because it’s the only thing that helps me sleep at night.
I’m glad you’re involved in the cause - I just wanted to highlight how we should have class solidarity against the ruling class and not divide ourselves based on who’s not voted for whom as if that’s what makes it or breaks it.
I just want to preface this that as a trans person I totally understand your fears and agree they are completely valid - however I also want to make you aware of your relative privilege (being able to pack up and leave the US) - compared to almost all Palestinians that cannot do the same on top of also not being able to see their parents - not because of immigration but because they’ve been blown up by American bombs.
I just want to point out that by blaming voters for not compromising on their values around human rights (instead of blaming the DNC for enabling genocide) - you’re showcasing that you personally care more about your child’s domestic rights being threatened than Palestinian children being killed - yes both are atrocious but I would hope that you can see how being killed right now should take precedence over likely (but avoidable) suffering down the line.
Instead you’re saying that your daughter’s safety is more important than middle eastern children dying (which for you personally is valid) - but you can’t claim that everyone else should care about your child’s potential struggles in the future vs other’s children’s deaths right now.
I just hope you will now become more understanding of the Palestinian struggle (as a refugee yourself) and will fight for the DNC to recognize both your rights and theirs as you now more viscerally understand how you’re both in the same boat.
As I said in another comment in this thread:
Now if they truly believed that fossil fuels were needed for a sustainable transition - then surely they would give out their trillions of oil and gas revenue to countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh to help them rebuild from the environmental disasters they’re experiencing to deploy more sustainable infrastructure and housing.
As noted above - Norway gets most of it’s renewable energy from it’s geographic location (88% of power coming from hydro) so them being “a few hundred miles south” would mean extreme heats and droughts that are really difficult to deal with even with perfect renewables - all the sun in the world can’t give you free water (yes there’s desalination but hypersaline brine is such a PIA that it’s not a silver bullet) - so while it’s commendable that they’ve gone “fully green” - until they stop making bank on their massive scope 3 fossil fuel emissions - it’s a bit of a misdirection to say they’re helping the global environment.
So now that Norway has 99% renewables and will soon reach 99% electric vehicles, they’ll stop drilling oil in the North Sea, right?
They’re best positioned for the Contraction and Convergence strategy so continuing to pump and sell oil is antithetical to their sustainability stance.
Unless they’re creating a walled garden while letting everyone else around them burn - tho let’s hope that’s not the case as once the AMOC collapses and brings the likes of 160km/h bomb cyclones to it’s territories it wouldn’t matter how green they’ve been.
Question from those who would like to see other Fediverse content on Lemmy - anyone know how to?
As in I’d much rather read actual mastodon/bluesky posts than screenshots of mastodon/bluesky posts uploaded to Lemmy.
But you see one of them is about erasing ingenious peoples history (the Mexica/Aztec) - where the other is about forcing PoC to look at racial stereotypes - so one is cool and fun and the other is woke and bad 😤
Calling it simplified does a disservice of the real world impacts of the “trolley” - especially since unlike a thought experiment - this trolley problem is physically constructed by people to achieve imperialistic goals - so expending energy blaming random lemmings for this - instead of figuring out who built, maintains and presents the trolley as the only option and how to dismantle it seems useless.
I believe we should avoid infighting and actually organize to do something so we don’t have to choose if we pull the lever or not every 4 years (if there even is another election…)
