    1. Get Firefox
    2. Get uBlock Origin: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

Step 1 is critical because ad blockers on Chrome (for obvious reasons) have some limitations. Even the developer of uBlock origin recommends Firefox: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/uBlock-Origin-works-best-on-Firefox

      Alternatively. Get Adnausem

It is built on top of ublock origin and will “click” on the adverts behind the scenes and make advertisers think you like a product messing with your advertising profile.

It also has a nice AdVault so you can see what advertisers are trying to push onto you.

Even better: get Librewolf with uBO pre-installed!

Just get uBlock Origin instead. Years ago I made the switch and never looked back!

Yeah, it was obvious when the original dev sold out, but I could never be seen in public again at this point. It’s a disgrace. “hey look guys, it’s the one who saved the internet and then sold their dignity because they are a massive pussy!” every second of every day has to be brutal. That check could never be enough for that.

Why the fuck are people still using adblock? They did a similar thing many years ago already, which is when ublock properly took off.

The most obvious and predictable answer, yet the correct one. There is zero reason not to use uBlock Origin!!

I believe what they’re referencing is sites that require you disable your ad blocker to access; they’re saying you will be able to bypass those gates while keeping your ad blocker enabled

Still enshitification though. Fuck everything about this

If you’re going to spend €40, you might as well get a Raspberry Pi and setup a PiHole. You cam also run your own Mastodon server and Lemmy instance on it if you set them all using Docker.

Tailscale makes it realy easy to connect your pihole remotely (it even has a guide on how to set it up here), and has the aded bonus that you can get it to point to your pihole’s DNS without having to touch any router settings if that has been an issue for you :)

Are they not a German company? In that case they have to show the price including VAT. AFAIK a price that excludes VAT, even if that is stated, is not enough when selling to consumers.

What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.
