I’m looking for an Adobe Acrobat alternative, or PDF-editor, that is capable of:
- marking text;
- adding text;
- adding comments (like one would do in MS Word);
- adding a signature (in some way);
- preferably, but not necessary: the ability to recognise text in files where the text is not selectable (i.e. one can copy text from an image file that was saved as a PDF, like some printers do when scanning pages).
Does anyone happen to know of any European or Open Source alternative that fit this description? I have sworn to never again install any Adobe software.
As others have said:
Okular (comments, forms, highlighting) Firefox (adding signatures (=images) LibreOffice Impress
If you know Docker there’s also https://www.stirlingpdf.com/
(If you need print proofing with CMYK color profile and pdf checks you’re out of luck afaik, your best bet is Scribus)
For years in love with PDF24
Free tool made in Berlin 🇩🇪
https://www.pdf24.org/de/ https://www.pdf24.org/en/
Edit: changed “from Berlin” to “in Berlin” because a very smart internet user noticed that English isn’t my first language and helped me improve my grammar by mocking my post with a mediocre dad joke while not contributing to OPs question himself.
made from Berlin 🇩🇪
They killed berlin to make this? Dats fucked up. /s
I’ll check it out, thanks!
Amazing!
For viewer I would say Sumatra (Polish) or Okular, but I don’t know any European or open source editor unfortunately
+1 for Sumatra as a viewer, it’s super fast, even with large documents.
Okular has support for filling forms, but I’m not sure if it has more advanced editing features.
A non-adobe, but closed-source alternative is Foxit. It’s Chinese, so not EU, but also not US (:
Thanks for the recommendations, Sumatra and Okular seem popular alternatives so I’ll check them out.
I know that you can use Firefox to do some basic edition on PDF like your first and second point, maybe even the fourth point but no more. You can check a box by clicking on it too.
For more “complex” editing, I’m using GIMP but you have to know how to use it.
I’ve tried both but I feel GIMP is a bit cumbersome to edit a PDF with. Firefox is great as a reader and some basic text input, but no more. Thanks for the recommendations though.
