edit: someone made this point elsewhere, but like, people can come up with new symbols and new flags. this sidesteps the issue altogether, and you’ve created new meaning instead of trying to “take back” a symbol

I tried to intervene in 50501 in my city, it was demoralizing AF. Clicked up with some PSL comrades, and if I had like party support like them then I would have been able to stay in it longer.
There seems to be a left and a right faction at the national level, the right was constantly depoliticizing and advocating working with cops, but the left was gaining ground at least a few months ago. Started vocally support for Palestine, and told local formations not to work with police.
But the local group was fucking awful. Both completely inexperienced and totally clueless, and yet in charge of organizing these big events. White dudes who were able to just step into state leadership positions and turn them into weird cults, people with severe emotional problems claiming they were the founder of the statewide formation because they created a discord server. Wouldn’t work with black and queer groups that have been operating locally, just blew them off. Alienated our city’s street medics by saying that medics that had been attacked by police, hadnt actually been attacked because they didn’t see it.
I had some luck getting some folks who were asking for something more radical to spin off their own group, and a young woman in leadership to join her local DSA chapter (with mixed results) but that’s about all. Its the last time I intervene in a movement like this without organized support, it took a lot out of me.
