Mr. Krabs is bothered by the squeaking of the boots and buries them underneath the floorboards. The next day, no one suspects him, but he continues hearing the squeaking everywhere, which drives him mad and causes him to reveal the boots and his guilt.
It seems too much of a coincidence to be an accident. Surely the writers were familiar with the story.
