The parallel between vestal virgins (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestal_Virgin) and the modern VTuber are pronounced. They’re typically young women, given potentially hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars a year, and they provide entertainment for their peers in exchange for the money.
That being said, they are generally expected to either be virgins or at least to keep their relationships hidden from their fans private eyes, and when someone finds out they are sexually active adults they can lose significant standing in the community sometimes up to and including “graduation”, which is a reframing of the living burial punishment of the ancient vestal virgins.
What do you think of my theory?
I think K-pop idols fit the description better, cause some of these vtubers post softcore porn on YT itself, lol.
I feel like there’s a good chance that many of the Vestal Virgins were lusted after by their contemporaries, and possibly did things that socially or parasocially attached them to their fans.
They probably wouldn’t have had to come up with the bloodless death punishment for breaking their vows if it weren’t for the fact that enough of them were breaking their vows that they needed to make a rule about it.
That being said, yes, I also very much agree K-pop stars and J-pop stars and the like are also lumped into that larger group.
