The company’s hardware division, now led by ex-Apple executive Tang Tan, has poached at least 25 staff from Cupertino and is targeting a 2026 launch for its first product.

Unless this speaker runs a local model somehow, what makes it different from a speaker with the ChatGPT API integrated? Is that all this is?

    Edit:

The device — described by suppliers as something that resembles a screenless smart speaker (in other words, an Alexa-adjacent device)

That sure sounds like that’s all this is. With how many OEM parts related to smart speakers there are available these days, doesn’t 20+ engineers seem like a lot for something like that?

Every company who has tried to make AI hardware has failed miserably.

HAL Laboratories made the flawed, but impressive HAL 9000 AI computer in 1992.

Ive isn’t an employee of OpenAI, is he?

That being said, I could see him help poach people even though it’s been six years since he worked at Apple.
