They’re mad that the communist can actually do the bipartisanship they always are hounding after.

“We have differences, but we both are motivated to look good, so let’s focus on that” goes a whole lot farther than just tailing Trump’s platform and talking points like a sad puppy for 10 years.

At the same time, imagine going ahead with meeting Trump. I get why he did, but ughhh

The big difference is that Sheinbaum is the president of a sovereign country that, while being dependent on the United States, also holds significant bargaining chips that can be leveraged against Trump. Mamdani has no such leverage so I think they aren’t comparable.

Its comparable in the sense of “trump doesn’t care about anything policy wise besides his he felt about the last person he talked to”

Not to overintellectualize Trump or fall into the Varoufakis trap of thinking everything is 5D chess, but I don’t think it’s good strategy to assume your enemies ignore material reality in favor of vibes.

That’s essentially their interpretation of Trump having more respect for people who stand tall and don’t act like a lapdog, even if they’re an adversary, than for your average Democrat who will lick his boots at the first opportunity.
