Remember in 2019 when Bernie referenced this 2013 study and began saying this on the campaign trail:
Since (welfare reform) was signed into law, the number of families living in extreme poverty has more than doubled.
And then news media went fucking bananas trying to call him a liar? Well, one of the ways they did that was by regularly referencing a newer study(PDF) that found that wasn’t true at all. Now by not true, did they mean that people actually had more than 2 dollars a day? Nope. They basically counted government assistance as cash and called it a day.
Anyway, here’s some financial wonk making the argument that the poverty line is more realistically at $136,500.
