I hate that we’re letting the Nazis appropriate the symbol of the swastika, originally a symbol of peace and fortune.
The swastika is thousands of years old, with the current earliest known examples being from the region of Ukraine dating to the paleolithic era. It’s not a ‘symbol of peace and fortune’, it’s a basic geometric design used by nearly all cultures across history to represent all sorts of things.
People need to stop thinking it’s just some Buddhist thing or what not.
That’s fair. I can get behind it having multiple meanings, as long as the one allowed meaning isn’t ‘Nazi’
We’re about 100 years too late to do much about that…
In post-World War I Germany, the newly established Nazi Party formally adopted the swastika in 1920.[23][182]
So because they decided to use it means they have the exclusive trademark of the symbol? We shouldn’t let them.
Knock yourself out, unless you’re in Germany or Austria I don’t think you’ll have the state knocking on your door for doing so.
But I don’t think you can act surprised if people take offence at your attempt to reappropriate a symbol which in many people’s minds, particularly western culture, is associated with hatred, discrimination, and atrocities. They’ll, quite reasonably, just assume you’re supporting Nazism.
I feel like a colour swap would be a better fit, but maybe that’s just me.
Red is often associated with the left.
Huh, TIL.
