New York City’s pension funds could resume investing in Israeli government bonds, a move that would funnel public money directly into Israel’s treasury despite the ongoing genocide in Gaza and its apartheid system in the occupied West Bank.
“The Israel bonds have performed very well and they continue to be investment grade rated,” Mark Levine, New York City’s chief financial officer, told the FT. “My fiduciary responsibility is to make investment decisions based on that record of performance.”
Israeli government bonds function as direct loans to the state, providing steady interest payments to investors while channelling cash straight into government coffers.
The worst lesson life has taught me is that if you are valuable enough you transcend morality. The people who decide that value do not follow any rules of conduct they create. The amoral, uncaring world only wants success defined by greedy people.
Unfortunate, but if he’s not otherwise beholden to rules regarding it, not much to be done. Thankfully Mamdani seems like he’ll be pushing for a fair amount of change.
Thankfully Mamdani seems like he’ll be pushing for a fair amount of change.
Where? As mayor Mamdani has a lot of levers to pull and he doesn’t seem to be pulling any of them against Israel.
This is the exact issue we have with Trump. No as mayor he does not get to be dictator of the city. There is some he legally can do on his own, but other things will require a vote from the city council.
Like changing the Zionist police chief which sent the police to mash in students skulls in New York under Eric Adams.
Wait did Mamdani change her? Surely he did right?..
Truthfully I don’t know the governmental structure of New York well enough to answer you for certain. I know every city I’ve ever lived in that would be a vote by the city council.
As others have said it’s week 2 so let’s see what he brings to the floor when the city council starts meeting and voting. If he fails to bring it up then I’m willing to support you on this.
Until then please remember that NYC is not operated as a dictatorship with a mayor that has absolute power.
Whoops dodged the question by pretending not to know the answer. We can all see why.
Hey if you’re familiar enough to explain the NYC system and can show me for a fact that’s within the mayor’s powers I’ll listen. Just source your claim. We can specifically talk about the power to remove the chief of police to keep the scope narrow.
I’m willing to be reasonable
He’s been mayor since the first. Can’t expect him to fix everything Adams left behind, along with all the other stuff on his agenda in two weeks.
Mamdani could order the NYPD to cease training with Israel today if he wanted.
NYC is the largest Zionist stronghold in the world outside of Israel he has massive power to affect that.
I don’t care about Mamdani getting treats for NYC residents if he’s going to allow NYC to continue supporting genocide. So far Mamdani has done nothing noteworthy except cancel a last-minute BDS resolution from Adams. And he condemned Hamas while allowing Zionist Synagogues to sell freshly cleansed Palestinian land to Jewish colonists.
I don’t care about Mamdani getting treats for NYC residents…
Well he’s the mayor of NYC, not a senator or congressperson, so of course he’s going to help the city he’s mayor of. Also, again, we are talking about someone on his second week of being mayor. It should come as no surprise he hasn’t waved a magic wand and fixed every single thing he said he was going to fix. If this came up six months into his term then yeah, fair bone to pick, but right now it just sounds like you’re looking for shit to be mad about.
So far Mamdani has done nothing noteworthy…
I’d call that pretty fucking noteworthy.
Well he’s the mayor of NYC, not a senator or congressperson, so of course he’s going to help the city he’s mayor of.
Yes and American congressmen should all support genocide because they’re not in Palestine but in the USA where imperialism and colonialism is awesome as long as you get treats for it.
Nothing to stop a literal genocide. In fact Mamdani is now complicit in genocide.
Wow cool more treats for imperialist city which invests in genocide.
Here go educate yourself for a bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fw7Ro8zspg
Cool strawman arguments. Blocked
A strawman is when your arguments get addressed and debunked haha.
You lost
So when you get a new job you go in within the first two weeks and make huge changes that impact everyone served by the company, without fully understanding the systems you are working with? That’s what you are asking for here.
Cuz he’s in transition. Training. Learning his job and how to do it. And running an entire city probably takes a bit more transition than some dumb corpo job where you can slot into many similar jobs.
Before election: “He’s going to go in and change the system!”
After election: “He’s learning how he needs to be part of the system!”
Yeah heaven forbid someone wants to do things right instead of doing things like Trump. Do what you like and who cares what you fuck up along the way, right?
Democrats “we can’t do things right, only dictators do that!”
Republicans: Do things
Nobody would care if Mamdani used his powers to good things. And no opponent of Mamdani will praise him for not doing so. You are making excuses.
Important article, esp. considering that they had already ended preferential treatment for Israel bonds in 2022.
But
defying Mamdani
Is it just me, or does that imply that Mamdani has more power than he has? I surely hope checks’n’balances are back in fashion in NYC.
Probably just a clickbait headline - all media outlets do this nowadays, big or small.
