Just bought a new phone after almost eight years with my current phone. The battery is knackered and the charging port died for the third time. This phone has been great, thank you buddy.

My new phone came in a 31*31*16cm package. It’s over 29,000x the volume of the phone it’s transporting. Seems incredibly wasteful to me. But despite all of that empty space, there’s no charger! Wtf?! Is this a thing now, that you don’t get a charger? Or am I just being ripped off?

I went straight to Motorola because my current phone from them is so good, now I’m feeling a bit scammed honestly

EDIT: It seems like I’m getting old, apparently you just don’t get a charger any more. It’s pretty standard. Helps cut down on packaging apparently(!) I guess I approve in principle, but when you ship it in a massive box anyway and I’ll need to buy a new charger to get the best out of the new phone anyway, it just means I have to spend even more than I budgeted for and have a second package delivered to me at even more cost and environmental impact. Yay I guess.

The lack of a charger comes partly from an EU measure. They essentially don’t want huge numbers of unnecessary chargers made and sold while passing that cost to the consumer. On that basis they think you should be able to use the existing charger you have or buy one separately to suit your needs.

This is actually a good move overall. You are paying for the charger when you get it with your phone, you just pay more for the phone. They made it a requirement that devices have a USB C port for charging so they are all compatible. That means if you like fast charging you can get a charger which supports that and suitable cables. If you prefer lower charging speeds and want a longer cable you can do that instead. Or if you want to exclusively use wireless charging you can do so too.

I personally have not found the chargers from phones to be of good quality, mostly they were just barely passable.

Do you think I can use my old charger? The new phone doesn’t specify the voltage it’s expecting, it just says 33W or higher

USB PD controllers will will negotiate the voltage from the supply. I’m not sure why it would say 33W minimum though.

Fast charging, under that it will move itself to slow charging. Or turbo charging. Whatever the new adjective is.

Presumably because it was advertised with a certain charging time and 33W is needed to achieve that time. That’s my guess. The “instructions manual” is basically one very small piece of paper

So, I will start this by saying you both can use your old charger and you should buy a new one.

Your old charger will at best charge it over 8-12 hours. It would be perfect to charge it over night, but you will need to charge it faster through the day and it will burn itself out trying to keep up with your phone.

A ‘super fast charger’ is a great option, and it will charge you to 75% within a relatively short period of time. It should start backing off due to the way batteries work, and take about another 30 minutes or so to charge the rest of the way.

If you get an adaptive fast charger for charging overnight, that will also do a great job.

Be wary of the combined chargers with a bunch of ports. I have one for the couch and one of the ports is already dead.

Or you could use your laptop charger if you have one, it’s what I do half of the time.

Motorola G57 Power. Upgrading from a G7 Power, so it’s literally 50 better! Although so far I like my old phone a lot more 😢 there’s just a lot of bullshit to set up and turn off. No phone, I do not need AI this or suggested that or steal-my-data other. I don’t want you to randomly turn on WiFi or connect to other people’s devices. And also the swipe controls are different which is less problematic but more annoying

They don’t have the audio connector hole either. Bet it’s to save in packaging too…

But, good for you to keep your machine up and running for 8 years!

I do have a 3.5mm jack, because I knew I had to be on the lookout for that!

I honestly wish this phone could have lasted longer, but each time I repair it it breaks a little sooner. The last charging port replacement only last a week before it stopped working correctly, and now it’s incredibly difficult to get it to charge at all

Got a Pixel 10 Pro XL recently. No charger, just the cable.

People obviously don’t need new chargers anymore. 🙄

There are so many USB power sockets already available. This is good for less waste. Also it encourages phone makers to actually adopt a common fast charge system, since proprietary brand chargers are less common.

If you’re having an 8 year old phone it might not be so fun, since micro USB was still widely used. On the other hand, all you need is a cable, if you don’t care about fast charging.

The last MicroUSB phone I had must’ve been close to 15 years ago by now… I don’t think they were common for phones in 2018

Time passes quickly. I remember having a oneplus 3. One of the earlier models to adopt USB C. This was apparently in 2016 (10 years ago). The regulation from the EU was voted in favor in 2022 (the Radio Equipment Directive). Most android phones had already adopted us C by then, save for budget models. So it’s very much possible OP had a micro USB phone before this. Or an iPhone.
