Xaeg/Yay was the owner of LemmyNSFW, and he had access to and paid for the domain, server, and everything else related to the site. He has been AWOL for about 6 months now, and suddenly this month, the server and the domain stopped being paid for. I have no access to the server to get the database.
Because of this LemmyNSFW as it was, and all the content on it, much to my dismay, seems to have died.
So what now?
In my opinion, and I feel many other people’s opinion as well, the fediverse needs a place for NSFW! A place run ethically while also allowing people to (within reason) explore their kinks, sexuality, etc. as they please.
So I have created FediNSFW to be that place! It is a piefed instance instead of a lemmy one because if there’s one thing NSFW content benefits from it’s good moderation tools and flairs, and piefed has those things.
As for now I have access to the DNS records to the lemmynsfw domain but there seems to be another dns setup that I don’t have access to, in four months the ownership of the site will lapse, and I will try to aquire it so I have full control of it. Until then, I had no choice but to create this new site.
I am, as of now, the sole admin and owner of the site!
Now hosting is NOT free by any means, and I assume costs will rise, so I have created accounts on a few platforms so that people who would like to can donate.I plan to keep this site going as long as I can, and the more donations the site receives, the easier that will be!
I will NEVER ask anyone to pay to enter the site, this is purely voluntary.

The Future
I will slowly build out some of the formerly existing communities based on some snapshots of lemmynsfw from the wayback machine. But it would be much easier with the help of the community, so logically, I am looking for admins and mods!

If you would like a community to be made and you’re willing to check up on it and maybe make some posts here and there please make it! NOTE: for security reasons your account must be 24 hours old to create a community locally

If you’d like to be an admin, obviously there will have to be some trust between you and I and you may need to be up to the task of potentially doing some sysadmin work. But message me on here or preferably on matrix if you’re interested!
The guy who keeps creating new communities and posting them here, not sure if that’s you or part of your admin team or just someone who’s really enthusiastic about porn.
Can we see if there’s a different way of handling that?
Nothing against porn, not even generally against porn here, but the way it’s currently happening it’s filling up like half my feed with posts about new porn communities.
And I get it, you’re trying to get a whole new instance up and running from scratch, you need to rebuild the communities that existed on the old instance etc.
I have no personal experience with admin and moderation, so take my thoughts for what they’re worth, but here they are

I think we may need a temporary moratorium on this community against posts for new NSFW communities except for maybe a once-daily megathread listing all of the new ones created since the last one came out. I don’t want that to last forever, just for the next couple of days or maybe week or two depending on how the rollout goes until things slow down a bit.

Create a separate newNSFWcommunities community, probably over on the new instance, where all of those communities can get their own post. Maybe see if we can get a post about that stickied here.

Less of a suggestion, more about a concern, but seeing one guy creating and modding a bunch of communities kind of gives me some worries about reddit-style powermods, and I remember after a bunch of people migrated here after the reddit API debacle there was a little bit of a problem with people creating communities and not doing much to grow them, just kind of squatting on them or abandoning them, and I’d hate to see that happen with this. I’m hoping maybe that’s one of your admins, or maybe just a single well-intentioned person working on their own creating them as placeholders to eventually turn over to someone else, and that’s valid, but I do think it may be a bit misguided and it may be better to let those communities spring up on their own more organically to be started, run, and populated by people who have an actual interest in those communities, so that may be something to keep an eye on.
He’s also been a little sloppy and didn’t properly mark a couple of his posts as NSFW at first, and that’s not cool. Seems like he’s keeping on top of changing it when that’s pointed out, but that’s still a problem.

Sorry about that, piefed has a checkbox that automatically posts to this community when you create a community, I’ve mentioned it to him so he can uncheck it from now on.
The nsfw button is also now set to on automatically on the instance.
He told me that he’s happy to give those to other people if someone requests a community, but yeah he could have just made a few and let other people make them, but these will most likely get transferred to other people in time, most of the ones he re-created were at least semi popular.

Honestly, all tech services es need porn to advance it. VHS. DVD. The internet. Reddit. They won’t admit it but porn was likely the driver. If you don’t believe me look back at all the services that were doing just fine until they cut off the porn.

Yes, ideally we’d have multiple NSFW instances for different interests but with the financial and legal hurdles we have to take what we can get.

For resilience, are there more folks willing to step up? The issue with lemmynsfw was that it was all of our eggs in one basket.
I plan to set up the accounts related to the site to be accessible by other admins, I’ll probably host a password manager on the site’s server, or maybe just create an account one of the popular ones, with relevant credentials in it. That way if something happens and I disappear they can just login and take over. That’s part of why I’m actively recruiting admins.
As far as cost goes FOR NOW I can fully afford the cost of the server without donations, as far as I can tell at least. Currently the donations are just set to go into my personal account, but I would love to get to the point where we can set something up like or maybe joining the fedihosting foundation and have a pool of donations accessible without me.

What’s this instances stance on “cute” porn? By that I mean the common trend on lemmynsfw of promoting porn of women as young as legally possible who look often significantly younger (I’m not sure about lemmynsfw but this has lead to other websites hosting underage material). This trend also goes under the names “bearly legal”, “teen”, and other such similar names.

The laws of the state are not laws of morality, something can be legal (or appear to be) and still open the door for unethical behavior.
an adult participating in adult things for adults is the important part. No one is being harmed in that context.
The issue isn’t the adult doing adult things, the issue is the viewers that are looking for content that is deliberately designed to look underage.
An adult participating in adult things specifically in a way that makes look like they’re not an adult is visually indistinguishable from a minor participating in adult activities, the former in this case actively makes the later easier
