So, as the title says I want to start a run on WoW.

I have always had mild interest on the game, but didn’t have money to pay for its subscription when I had the time to play it.

Now I still don’t have a lot of time, but my interest has grown. I would like to play with my girlfriend and enjoy the journey of exploring new places. What do you recommend to fulfill these expectations? I have some interest to check classic without expansion WoW, but I have heard that is easy to get lost.

crate character, and just follow the quests. that’s it, question alone will allow you to explore at your own pace. don’t focus on dungeon running, don’t worry about raids or max level. just learn the character, and run questions.

read and explore. this was my wow experience, now a days, I don’t even know what wow is. always feels like a rush to end game and I miss the slower questing.

Yeah, rushing endgame is not something I’m worried about. I don’t even think I will get that far lol.

I guess I will just play then!

    It’s been a minute, so I don’t know if there’s been changes…

Make sure you look up how to get to each other, if you first roll a different race. Each race has a starting zone and there’s a little (optional unless deathknight) quest line to get to the bigger cities. If you are a troll and she is a blood elf then you might have a bit of running.

Or you can ask in chat for a mage to portal you to her. You will more than likely have to get to a main city to find a mage with a high enough level to make a portal.

Whatever you do find a guild you like and mesh well with and leave if you don’t! WoW is first and foremost an MMO and playing with randoms can have deeply mixed results. The more friends you have the more stuff you can do without pulling your hair out.

If your goal is exploring, I would recommend starting with classic WoW. The game is more grounded and quests force you to explore more. If you want more, then I would jump to retail (modern) where there is much more content. Retail has flying very early on which kills a bit of the exploration experience.

  • So wow and its versions get confusing fast. Given what you have said I would recommend either the permanent “era” servers or the anniversary servers.

Era is the original 2004 1-60 experience and has its own dedicated player base of folks who want nothing else. Its pretty fun, though very much lacking in many quality of life features.

Anniversary servers are new ish progression servers that have just moved to the burning crusade expac so its now levels 1 - 70 with the addition of outland. This is still early enough in the timeline of wow that it won’t be overwhelming in endless “dead” content

Theres also retail (modern wow with every content expac since 2004), mists of pandaria classic (the first set of classic progression servers) as well has hardcore(one life, permadeath)

Which ever version you choose to play,I would recommend the addon questie, which you can get from wowinterface or curseforge. It’ll make questing in any of the classic servers a lot more manageable and significantly less confusing

Hey, thanks for responding! That addon sounds really useful. Perhaps will give a try to Anniversary Servers, sounds like a good middle ground.

I kind of like the Wizard archtype, if I can have one of those Gandalf hat’s I will be happy. Any recommendations?

Poster above is definitely correct… but, don’t get too attached until you’ve had a chance to sample the play style.

The obvious choice is mage, but I like wizards too and I hate the mage play-style.

The thing I hated most back in the day was that you have to be able to keep moving in WoW, but I don’t feel like any other class is punished quite as much for that movement. You can lose a lot of DPS often purely from bad luck and RNG and while that is true for everybody… feels like mages have it worst. It feels bad.

I will say I haven’t played in years, so I could be out of date. The classes I enjoyed playing the most were definitely not the ones I expected going in though.

I think you should try modern wow they just revamped the new player experience, I’ve not try it, but I will come back for the new expension. I just play solo and chill doing quests and delves so I don’t know much about other ways of playing. Housing looks awesome tho.

I have some interest to check classic without expansion WoW, but I have heard that is easy to get lost.

That’s the fun part, isn’t it? Even new games, I flat out refuse to find maps online or web search to help ‘figure stuff out’ unless I get really, really, REALLY stuck. They designed it that way on purpose - it makes it more immersive and enjoyable imo - both getting lost in mechanics, as well as in ‘the world’.

I understand how that can be fun, because I have enjoyed it on the past like on Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2. But getting lost is not the experience I am looking for right now.
