Ancient Chinese emperors used to drink mercury to achieve immortality, too. 2000 years of history couldn’t be wrong.
They used to use it for all sorts of stuff in europe in the renaissance era and thereabouts until the modern era, especially syphillis that was endemic, introduced from the americas by the spanish, it was a long slow disease. But I forget what all they used it for other stuff as well.
