He didn’t join the Ukrainians out of some deep conviction that the war is wrong, he just didn’t want to get murked by his own people.
Russians that surrender don’t have to serve in the war though, depending on how they surrender they can either wait for exchange, emigration, or even be granted amnesty and stay in the country. I’m proud of anyone who chooses to help my homeland regardless of circumstance.

Aren’t you making a lot of assumptions without any solid proof? Even if his reason for flipping was fear of his own death, that doesn’t mean he likes killing.
Ok but we can extrapolate that because he was killing and did not stop killing and now is killing . He could stop. He must like it
He was part of the russian army, then fought with an officer and was send to the front instead of being sentenced.
He then surrendered and then:
He helped build fortifications, performed maintenance work, and even took part in battles.
So to summarize; he was part of the army (you can’t know the reason why, might have been simply to provide for his family), then he was forced to the frontline and finally he joined the Ukrainian army mainly in a maintenance role seemingly.
I’m not saying you are 100% certainly wrong, just saying you are assuming a lot.
