Speeding in school zones that used to host speed cameras has shot up since the cameras were turned off, according to new City of Ottawa data.
…
In a report to council’s public works and infrastructure committee, staff say compliance at those pilot sites fell from 87 per cent to 51 per cent within just three weeks of the cameras’ removal.
Three months after removal, compliance had dropped even further, falling to 41 per cent. High-end speeding rose from 0.3 to 4.5 per cent during that period.
When we banned enforcing the law people stopped following it?!?!?!?!!?!?? What?!?
No fucking shit. The fact that people complain that speed cameras are a government money grab blows my mind.
Have you ever tried not fucking speeding?! You don’t have to pay if you don’t speed. Jfc
We need more speed cameras not less.

Probably the private company that is administering the cameras
From what I can tell, the City of Ottawa administered the cameras.
Apparently it was administered by a third party for a while, but they brought it in house.
My brother’s previous boss owned shares in the private company that ran red light cameras.
He red an article how the company changed the light sequence length to make more people run red lights to get more money. Initially was mad but than realized he owned shares and thus was receiving the benefits and so was not mad about it.
The city of Ottawa ran the speed cameras, not a private company. I believe that speed limits are set by a different organization.
Well then in the US a private company will run the cameras for a cut of the fines…they have been caught shortening the length of yellow lights, poorly calibrating the cameras, doing other greasy shit.
I don’t love them due to their panopticon like nature, but I’m am a lot less hostile to a government administered program, at least (assuming it’s not in the Nazis States of Trump) the revenue generated would stand a chance at doing some good vs making bad people profits.
It’s almost like putting up a speed camera on a stroad does absolutely nothing to address the design issues that caused people to drive fast on those roads to begin with 🙄
But it does reduce speeding, so there’s that.
Only within 100 or so feet of the camera itself though. Proper road design can make the whole road safer

Shoulda turned them off but left them there and not told anyone.
This sounds like techbro propaganda
In what way?
To manufacture consent for mass surveillance
Research paid for by (whoever was making money off the cameras)
The city of Ottawa spent the money from fines on traffic safety. Who was making money off of that?
