What diplomacy does the pope recommend towards an aggressor that only understands violence? Also, does he recognize Russia’s aggression on Ukraine, or is he still pretending nothing happened?
Childish view. Diplomacy means a negotiation. Strongmen don’t negotiate with countries they can crush militarily.
A strong European defence is the only way to ensure Europe remains in a diplomatic position
Plus the whole point of increased military spending is that once potential aggressors see your impressive military and become more likely to decide not to attack you. You buy weapons to not need to use them. The only danger is the risk of becoming America, feeling the need to justify the expenditure by starting wars. But that risk is not inevitable.
Everyone remember how we beat Hitler by unilaterally disarming, linking arms and singing Kum-Ba-Ya until he was shamed out of his warmongering ways?
You can’t be diplomatic when a powerful madman wants to take all of your things. You have to act. Reason does not work in unreasonable situations.
I would argue you can ONLY be diplomatic if you are in a position to defend yourself from an enemy. Nobody is going to negotiate with a non-threat

Many ideologues are incompetent at understanding a fundamental fact of life: diplomacy is powerless to prevent one’s country from being butchered by a DarkTetrad/DarkTriad country, exactly the same as diplomacy is powerless to prevent rape: physical-fight is REQUIRED when adversary deems one to be their “rightful” prey.
