Probably for the best. When people think “registered sex offender” they think “dangerously crazy person” but there are ways to commit a “sex crime” that are not as serious, and it’s possible for people who were deservedly registered to reform.
It’s like blanket rules against felons. A felony ranges pretty significantly from trying to pass a bad check all the way to murder. Being a “registered sex offender” could just mean that the person tried to patron a sex worker, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they committed a violent or egregious offense.
The GOP would have no one to run if that bill passed so they killed it.
