And every comments section is one person saying “I went to therapy once and it was awful” and people being like “amen”.

I went to therapy once and it was awful.

I went to therapy again and it’s now something I look forwards to. That first guy just sucked.

Because theres lots of bad therapists out there that pollute the field and give it a bad name.

There are absolutely good ones too, but they are very hard to find under the best of conditions, much less when you are at the lowest of lows and desperately searching for a hand to pull you up.

I’ve also ended up in that hole. Desperately reached out for help, and found a therapist who was glad to take my money, hinted at disbelieving science, and ultimately spent every session fluffing their own ego and not discussing my issues at all, until the end of the last session, where she finally realized i was there and said “oh, btw, you’d just get better if you stopped being a heretic and accepted god already”

Its hard to self advocate when you are at the lowest of low, much less try to go through all the headache, paperwork, cost and hastle of starting over again with another one who could be just as bad.

And even if you manage to find a good therapist, Theres a chance that the technique/approach they use might not mesh with you and help you. So now you have to find another therapist, thats good, and uses a different technique.

Its really fucking hard to do at your absolute best mental health state, much less at your deepest and darkest.

I literally just commented on the other one (the oyster-pearl comic) about my own betrayal. I did say how it shouldn’t discourage someone from going, but that it just sucked to experience that

Therapy is awesome and has helped me more than I can put into words. A bad experience should never stop you from trying to better yourself, even if it makes you a little more cautious for a bit

In this comment section, we shall say: Therapy is amazing! And it’s given me motivation to find a therapist again (cause I’ve been putting it off since I moved)

Quite often when I hear or see a joke I think a bit further than the surface level and ponder how that joke reflects on the image of someone in real life. Sometimes the answer is ‘not good’. The same goes for things other than jokes, so it always makes sense to consider how things you encounter may affect you

Cats like to hunt birds, it’s really not that serious brother. It’s a funny joke.

Also, just to get some downvotes, generally speaking the more offensive a joke the funnier. As long as you’re not directly making fun of a specific individual offensive jokes are funny af. And even if you are making fun of someone in specific, like Charlie Kirk, it’s still funny as fuck.

This reminds me of a therapist I had that only lasted a single session, and I never went back. Not that he was trying to trick me outside but, I’m very introvert and from the go he started to insist on communities, on reaching out and finding like minded people. He may have had good intentions but to me it felt like he was trying to bring me into his religion, and I couldn’t stand this approach.

Seemed to work. You’re here. You reached out, joined this community and are talking to like minded people. Gooba gobba gooba gooba gabba! We accept you! Once of us! One of us!

I was already a geek that used internet to escape reality nearly 30 years ago. That part hasn’t changed. He wanted my to do it physically. Like, join the local Esperanto club or something like that.

And as much as he may have been right, sometimes what matters most is how it’s brought up and said. It felt like he was trying to convince me to “go join them!”, or more accurately “come join us!”. As if it was a cult and the only natural thing to do. Just like society makes me feel in general.

It sounds like he lacked tact and maybe is just a bad therapist tbh. I dunno, maybe he’d be good for socialite types, but I feel like a good therapist meets you where you’re at. I think the first session or two should be dedicated to learning about you with minimal suggestions for change. It sounds like even you’re aware that more of that type of thing might be benificial, but making changes like that take a lot of work on yourself over a signifigant length of time, and a suggestion from a therapist isn’t where it needs to come from, you need to come to the conclusion yourself.

That’s my take as someone who has seen only two people, the first was bad and the second has been great, she did exactly that, basically just listened and asked questions for the first couple times I saw her. Even now she doesn’t really make concrete suggestions, more asks leading questions that make me think and come to conclusions on my own. Tbh sometimes I just wish she’d tell me what to do haha, but I know that’d piss me off and that isn’t how it works at all.

It may just have been a bad match. What he said was very generic but I couldn’t help myself but transpose it into a religious speech. It could have worked if he was also talking about religion. And it creeped me out. Maybe a smart thing would have been to tell him, but I chose not to go back instead.

But yeah, I hope it’s working for some other people because to me, it felt like someone was trying to get me into a pyramid scheme.

So therapists are just there to manipulate me into dangerous situations? No wonder I dont trust them.

My agoraphobia’s foundation is the other definition of phobia. That is, I don’t fear being outside per se, I just really, really hate it. 99% of weather sucks and I’m away from home comforts, and that takes my already shaky mental health down into the negatives.

I’m not afraid of people either, but the fear of making a fool of myself, ah, well that might count as an actual phobia.

I’m in a similar category. Exactly the same about hating being outside because I’d rather be comfortable. In terms of people, I don’t want to exert the effort. The me that is so charming and delightful is a farce. It comes naturally, but leaves me so drained. Its comfortable being at home around my safe people and not having to fix my face when outsiders say something I don’t like.

Only the amateur would strike when the bird makes their first outing. Let the bird become comfortable first, let them let their guard down, and attack when they least expect it.
