Saw the earlier post about the evil drip machine, figured I’d jump in and post my deranged coffee setup too. The picture contains both the tools and all of the ingredients that make up ~90% of my coffee intake. I have a moka pot and a french press and a grinder in the kitchen, as well as a little buzzy tool that froths milk that I use when I’m making coffee for any set of people larger than just myself. I even go to a local roaster so I can keep 3 or 4 exotic sounding bags of coffee beans around to make for/impress company. Nobody I know irl has ever seen the Taster’s Choice setup of shame, yall can consider yourselves (un)lucky

Pretentious coffee jackass here: if you have one of those little cheap-o frothing wands you can whip that instant coffee with a touch of hot water and some stevia to make a sort of knockoff dalgona coffee. Tastes awesome iced with a bunch of milk!

No shame in enjoying what you enjoy :)

Dang, this is really good! Not quite the kick in the teeth I’m looking for in the morning, but I love it as a dessert coffee. My girlfriend tried it and immediately went out to pick up a bottle of Irish cream, so I can only assume I’ll be making a few more these in the coming weeks haha

No disrespect from me! Enjoy your coffee however you enjoy your coffee, that’s all that matters.

With that being said, fuck Nestlé.

Thanks for the kind words :) you are absolutely welcome to take a jab if you want. I did not realize I’d actually end up embarrassed about anything here, but you’ve inspired me to do a bit of looking into different sources of instant coffee and their supply chains

I’m not too knowledgeable on instant, I just personally am very deligent about avoiding Nestlé. I’ve heard of some specialty roasters offering instant, that may be a route to take too. It’ll probably be a bit more expensive but it’ll be a small company, and likely fully traceable. Just something to consider. Outside of that I’m sure Lavazza probably has an instant offering. They’re a big company but they are still privately and family owned if that’s something that’s important to you. Your grocery store may have a store brand of instant as well. I know mine does, and I’ve heard at least mine is surprisingly good for what it is. But again, I don’t drink instant so I don’t know for sure.

It is a nestle product, and that is the part I am happy to be shamed into changing. I had not thought about it before today, but I’ve been reading the naturland standards since I made this post and trying to figure out if “fair trade” is regulated or enforced in any capacity, or if it’s a meaningless pay to play label like bbb

We keep a giant jar of instant coffee because my wife doesn’t like my coffee. She likes her coffee super weak so a giant jar should not be necessary but from time to time I run out of coffee beans and will drink instant instead and go thorugh it super fast. I also like instant for iced coffee because I usually forget to prep the cold brew.

I’d love to see a sudden surge in “guilty pleasure” or “don’t judge me” coffee setups. I think that would be fun. I know my posts probably come off as snobbish but I just know what I like, and that happens to be very similar to what coffee snobs are into. I’m happy to see people enjoy their drinks however they want to enjoy them, even if it’s instant coffee with sweetener and a half mug full of creamer. I just wanna talk about coffee in any capacity, honestly.

I want you to add my set up too! But at what point does it become not-coffee? I like coffee but can’t stand much caffeine, so most days I make a chicory not-coffee, would that be acceptable?

I think chicory would be fine as that’s been historically the most popular coffee substitute. But if you like coffee and just don’t do caffeine, why not try decaf? There’s some great options available. I love decaf, personally. It lets me continue making coffee late into the evening without affecting my sleep. I’m a big fan.

Somehow I have found a njce chicory but not a nice decaf. I also haven’t looked very hard after finding the chicory

Fair enough. It might be worth doing some research on though, lots of specialty roasters have a decaf option. I’d personally recommend getting something with EA or sugarcane process, rather than Swiss water process, as I find the flavour notes are far more distinct, but that’s just my opinion. SW is definitely the more popular one, at least where I live.

Either way, I’d love to see you post your setup in this comm!

I have a jar of Aldi instant coffee that I repackage for backpacking trips. It’s actually not bad. The best instant I’ve had is definitely Khao-Shong from Thailand

Currently traveling and only have access to a pourover for my morning coffee. Would I prefer an espresso? Yes. Would I rather die on espresso or nothing? No. Love thy coffee!
