I unironically love the name, but it’s definitely going to take me some time to get used to.
Yeah, “postmarketOS” had become a bit of a misnomer, since brand new phones can have it installed.
It worked wonderfully to get the point across; “This is an OS you flash after your phone is no longer supported”
Nura is nice, I do like it, but I doubt it’ll have the same instant “Oh I get it” that the name “postmarketOS” had. I could be wrong though.
The people who understand the meaning of a post-market operative system will already have experience installing Linux on their computers, in which case postmarketOS is no longer really a meaningful description.
I got used to pmOS, but never really liked it. Loving Nura, though it’ll take a while to get used to.
I wanna get to the time when instead of “after your phone is no longer supported” we can get Nura-first devices we can expect will last many many years. :D

I have just upgraded my steam deck to CachyOS handheld.
Might be a caching issue but the banner image still shows the old name for me.

Hey, that’s pretty neat! It looks like the name is based off a rock structure in Italy, representing stability :D
It’s also nice that it’s easier to pronounce for non-native English speakers (or as a matter of fact, non-English speakers!)
The new .eco URL is also interesting, from what I can tell it’s operated by a Canadian company called “Big Room”, and to register, you need to pledge that you will support positive change for the planet and you need to be transparent about your actions that could affect the environment.
We’ve already seem sites with the .org TLD get struck down by the U.S. government (e.g. Autistici/Inventati getting sanctioned as a “global terrorist organisation” for providing email and blog hosting services to “far-left antifascist terrorists”), so moving away from that is probably a good thing.
I don’t like the green washing domain costing 60 euros a year (+60 euros registration!) when it cost them cents… This is 101 gatekeeping internet in general, but I guess it OK for them to spent that amount of money to help closing the internet to small people with not that deep of money.
And this is not coming from a hater, I participated to PostMarketOS (as dev), I like the project and want to see the project growing, but I can’t stand the current “slipping into fascism” trajectory of western societies. Giving corporation full control and removing everything that made the internet neutrality (you can’t own a domain unless you have quiet the money now, don’t event get me started on e-mail or IPv6). Green washing is not going to help.

What about the old name was hard in German? It lacks the silent letters and bastardized French that English is known for.
I wish it was Nura OS or NuraOS.
So what is a good medium/cheap phone from the last 3 years where Nura can be installed without any risk of failure or damage?

Unfortunately there are few with complete functionality. I believe the project has been on hold while they do an audit and figure out governance. Hopefully the name change means that process is nearing completion and the focus can return to device functionality. Forgive me if i’m mistaking this for another project though.

FP6, “unofficially” as in, the patches are in a newer kernel version iirc, so when Nura catches up to said version, all the patches will work out of the box. ✨ For more info, I’d suggest checking this Community for all the FP6 updates

Hmpf. That’s stretching the upper end of medium/cheap quite a bit.
On the other hand medium/cheap, less than 3 years and still OEM unlockable is a very limited choice.
So, a phone that’s still well in the support window of the original vendor plus probably years more via LineageOS. I don’t see a ton of value in postmarketOS on the FP6.
Just in case, this is a Linux Phone forum. So the value is that, Naru is not android. Which matters when Google is incrementally releasing less and less of AOSP. But even then, you can still run Android inside Naru (and other Mobile Linux options) via Waydroid.
Why is there no value in mobile linux on a modern phone?
Atleast for me the value for Nura (which im glad is why they dropped the old name) is that its mainline linux, not that the orginal vendor doesn’t support it anymore.
An OS that has objectively less functionality, less stability and less battery life (probably less security, too) than what’s available via libre(-ish) alternatives doesn’t strike me as something anyone would want to have, at least while these alternatives still receive relevant feature and security updates.
If Nura is ever able to close this gap, that changes of course. For now I don’t see the appeal.On a 10 year old phone that can’t/shouldn’t be used for anything else that’s different, however. I’m glad to get a use out of that phone with Nura if the alternative is for it to be e-waste.
The reason people want it is freedom from big tech, AOSP is still controlled by Google.
And the convience of every device in my house running the same software does also play a part.
How dare they support a new phone! I want my money back!

LineageOS is probably the better option rn but i expect the Nura device list to expand quite a bit over the next year or 2. Keep an eye on it!
