If i fall behind I’m fucked so I keep on top always
I am absolutely terrible at managing chores at home by myself.
Unironically I have found Choreops to be a wonder. It is an app in Home Assistant and it let’s you define chores and assign points with them. My tasks for a day add up to about 800 points if I do everything, with bonuses for hitting streaks of 3 days, 5 days, and the full week. I can cash out those points for $25 towards a 3D printer, that is the current goal.
This means I see a clear list of tasks and they are linked to a monetary reward as well as having a single consequence, not getting that reward. This kills much of the stress around not doing things but also makes streaks fun and motivates doing at least the minimum.
To be clear, some of these tasks are not really negotiable, for example I am not going to skip feeding my cat, but that is actually a compound task which includes cleaning his food area so if I am actually completely ruined I can skip the extra and not mark it as done. This means I still feed him, I still put his old plate in the dish stack, but I don’t have to clean the area, but then because the only thing I have to do to get the points is wipe the area down it is a waste of having done all the other stuff to lose those points so I get it done.
It works well, it ties in with my home automation, and it is a nice visible progress bar towards my goal of buying a 3D printer so I can make cool things and fix little problems while learning to 3D model. For you it may or may not help, but I find it motivating and my partner has been an absolute boss helping me by setting it all up and making the tasks and their point scales.
Making them your special interest works wonders. I’m not even kidding. Recently keeping my previously messy house tidy started being like an obsession to me and I’m so hyped about keeping it this way. I’ll definitely try to do as much as I can while it lasts.
I solved it by not doing any. Our cook cooks, our maid cleans, and wifey cares for the remaining chores. Not because I see her as a chore-machine, but because she can’t stand my, well, timing with those things. By the time I have a plan how I will approach it, she is done 😁
Autopilot, habit and relentless shame/self abuse/beating myself up.
It’s not full proof, but it does prevent or at least slow down the overall decline. I can handle cooking, eating, sleeping, laundry, grocery shopping, dishes, pets if needed, basic self hygiene and reminding it to others and maybe something else as well which i might be forgetting at the moment.
Clutter and subsequent dusting are the biggest pain points, but in my defense i am managing up to 3 ADHDs(2 diagnosed, 1 suspected). Probably maintenance sex as well.
Though these are the ones that constantly reminde me that I’m not enough and need to do better. Need to try harder.
If I do them half as often as I should, I free up so much time to feel like a piece of shit for not doing them. It’s a winning strategy.
I live and die by my calendar and my task lists.
On a good day, I do maybe half the dishes and brush my teeth twice. So yeah, those chores are generally not getting done.
I’m great at the chores I like to do. So 40% of the chores are 100% done and the rest are 0% done
Thanks for the reminder, it’s time for my nap.
if it wasn’t for house inspections, I’d be living in squalor. I am HORRIBLE at chores.
