It’s pretty neutral on communism, which is probably for the best given that it doesn’t understand it at all. Its one attempt to dip a pinky into theory has them quibbling over the translation into English of ‘property is theft’ from Kapital, which is extremely not where that line comes from and Marx disagreed with it.
Labour organizing and attending CPUSA meetings are shown as broadly good things, but ones which Oppie needs to set aside for the greater good (since they need him to have the best chance of beating the Nazis to the bomb, and the FBI won’t give him a security clearance to join Manhattan if he keeps that stuff up). The USSR is even more off-screen than Japan.

It feels like that sub is somehow degrading. Like it was always evil and always stupid but there’s still somehow a sense to me that it’s devolved.
Gamergate was a lot of people’s first experience with the far-right infiltrating a vulnerable group then engineering and escalating a culture war.
There was a lot of naivety back then. The alt-right pinkie promising they weren’t neo-nazis was enough for thousands to give them the benefit of the doubt. People got swept up in it, believing it really was about “ethics in game journalism” and not just trying to bully feminists and anyone who defended them into suicide.
But that was hundreds of acts of domestic terrorism and melodramatic reactionary outcries ago. Most people shook off the mob mentality and saw it for what it was.

For most of them, it’s probably because they’re abusers without anyone in their life to abuse, trying to scratch that itch by hurling slurs at minorities.
