Ireland would be in the top 10 (if such an index were to exist) as we’re currently sitting around #4 in the Human Freedom Index. But we’re militarily neutral, and far more experienced in peace keeping rather than strategic military conflict.

So we’d sit that one out.

Do you reckon that was one of the main reasons it didn’t pass? From what I saw there were more local issues like fishing rights as one for example.

I’m more interested to see if their government will keep polling the issue until they get the answer they want.

Seriously, it’d be better for everyone if there was a solid majority for it, rather than a thin margin. And they obviously have concerns. So either we address those concerns to add a new member or they re-evaluate. I don’t think either are ideal.

I also think that for something as significant as joining (or leaving) that a majorty of at least 60% should be the trigger, not 50.1% or whatever. But that’s not how democracy works either.

And safety for all is important. The sceptic in me thinks it won’t impact the people who cause the most collisions.

Our readiness to offer protection to anyone in genuine need is respectable I think, so having a process in place if and when that protection isn’t granted should be respected too.

It’s like anything, targeting the low hanging fruit - people caught short in an unlucky timing of forgetting their hi vis one morning on the way to college. Scrotes who think it’s deadly knocking grannies over will either not be apprehended or just ignore the fines.

Like LUAS fares. You’ll always see a genuine tourist caught because they thought they were tapped on or whatever. But the fare dodgers get around the city scot and fare free.
