  • There was a poll showing that Trump won voters who don’t follow politics at all by 14 points. There seems to be a substantial proportion of the population who just picks who they vote for based on how well things have been going for them for the last 4 or 8 years.

With inflation, the pendulum swung towards Trump. After 4 years of tariffs, declining dollar value and Trump being unable to run again, I think that pendulum will swing fairly hard to the left. So conventional wisdom on not picking a candidate who will scare off centrists could be out the window. In which case, you might as well nominate AOC or someone similar.

Of course, president AOC won’t be able to accomplish all the things she wants to without a supportive congress and getting that to happen is a much bigger challenge than winning the presidency.

  • I don’t keep my phone on me for large parts of the day. The AW has just enough connectivity to get me the information I need without being a distraction. I’ve found it motivates me to do gardening, landscaping, etc. because I can track that as a workout. The weather alerts are also nice for that since it lets you know a few minutes before it starts/stops raining.

Mine is 7 years old now and the battery still lasts all day so I feel no need to replace it. I wonder if device longevity combined with lack of meaningful improvements might be slowing sales. They seem like the sort of device you wear until it stops working for a full day or you break it.

  • If you really want to make a successful utilitarian line of EV trucks you need a DC V2L standard capable of delivering 10 kW or more. Maybe something like USB-C PD with communication lines reduced in number and the power wires bumped up to 10 or 8 gauge wire. That would enable you to make BLDC-powered truck accessories that perform better and are cheaper than gas-powered alternatives.

For example, a BLDC powered wood chipper with a 5 kW motor could chip branches up to 5” or 6” and, due to the nearly flat torque curve, it wouldn’t stall out and need to be unclogged like a gas-powered version. Log-splitters, post-hole diggers, saw-mills, etc. that are powered by small gas engines would all be vastly inferior to their EV-powered BLDC counterparts - both in price and performance.

  • I think most didn’t vote because they are apathetic, ill-informed morons with the attention span of a gnat. They don’t understand inflation, tariffs, deflation, international relations, trade, renewable energy, oil production, gas prices, vaccines, healthcare, or much of anything else. They also don’t care to learn about how anything works. It’s not like the last chapter of the history book on the United States is going to blame the pro-democracy candidate for not doing enough to appeal to a public that was too lazy to continue living in a democracy. They have access to more educational resources than any humans in history and they just ignore it.

  • Lumber is the main reason I miss my small 90s truck. Lumber delivery is $75 to $100 depending on which place you order from. That’s fine for big jobs but I often just need a few boards or a sheet of plywood. Places like Lowe’s have truck rentals but then you have to make two trips back and forth. If I do place a delivery order I have to buy lumber for multiple projects and buy in excess of what I need just to be sure I’ll have enough.

I also don’t have trash pickup here and loading trash into a truck bed is much nicer than putting it into the trunk with potential smell and leakage issues.
