USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST

Quality participation with comments and/or good posts helps the community grow. Reporting rule-breaking content helps mods and admins keep the community growing as well. So monies and fucks are appreciated. er, wait, lemme rephraase that

Yes, not only is your donation appreciated, but posting about it shows others that they can. Before I was an admin, it was a thread like this with people posting that they were donating that reassured me into making a small monthly recurring donation, so comments like yours are appreciated. <3

Thank you <3
And to everyone else as I won’t reply to everyone so as not to spam up the thread :)

Just passing by as when I look for spam on the instance, one of the places I look is at all the media uploaded. Sometimes I have to go see the context, like this one - that’s a book I did have as a kid, so it’s always nostalgic to see it posted anywhere. :) Nicely used here. heh

I’m glad to see this here.
I think in the same way that the reddit community “Explain Like I’m Five” doesn’t require explanations to be geared towards actual five-year-olds, I think DadJokes are best described (and most commonly) silly puns. Jokes that tend to elicit a groan along with laughter.
I don’t think gearing them towards children is necessary at all, and so I would remove the concern about sex completely.
I’m an adult. I’ve never had kids. I enjoy dad jokes. It’s not about being an actual father, either, come to that.

It’s not surprising to me at all that you would say nasty things without knowing anything about me and making baseless assumptions.

From what i’ve seen from the modlog, I would expect a joke that revolved around dad referencing sex with mom (or their sexuality at all) would also get removed.
Note that I don’t personally agree with the rule, it’s just a rule I don’t see as problematic, nor being enforced unfairly.
Why don’t you have a problem with “bisexual” not being considered “gay”? Because you’ve decided that’s okay. And I don’t disagree necessarily, because for example we have LGBTQ+ which separates out the letters. But if you reduce that to a single word, it would probably be “gay”, meaning that bisexuality is also gay.
I’m sure it would surprise some of the commentors calling me a bigot to learn that my wife is bisexual. Not that you can’t have members of some class being bigots. But I’d imagine it would sitll surprise them. Nor do most people who don’t actually give a shit about the conversation and who are just looking for a convenient target to hate care much either. Which is not you, which is why I gave you an actual reply.

Interesting choice to make a reference written by a known transphobe.

I’ve taken a look at the moderator log, and they are pretty consistent about it.
I can understand the concern - seeing this post caused me to go take a look.
I’m open to my mind being changed, but it appears to me that they pretty consistently remove jokes with a sexual component, and often suggest c/unclejokes as an alternative place for posting them.
At the moment, this looks to me to be a community rule that not everyone agrees with, but a reasonable rule to have and enforce. It certainly does not break the Lemmy.World TOS.
The job of a moderator is to act as a janitor and facilitator. They remove spam, bigotry, and posts that don’t fit. And then hopefully help ensure the things that do fit are allowed - so the community then upvotes/downvotes on what they like or don’t like. But it is worth bearing in mind that moderators are all volunteers, and in addition to being a janitor and facilitator, they have often created the communities in question, and so should and do have a hand in how those communities operate. Ideally, it’s a balance between what the community wants and the vision the mod has for the community.
I will also say that 1) everyone’s opinions on what crosses lines are different, and 2) after moderating in various places for 30 years of my life, I can say that a surprising amount of content requires subjective calls to be made, even with brilliantly objective rules. Context is surprisingly critical in many cases, for example, although in this instance, it’s more about where lines are drawn and what exactly is “sexual”.
I personally don’t have any problems with this joke at all, and if I were the mod, I think I wouldn’t worry about what actual children might think of jokes - but that’s where this community is, and this removal seems reasonable to me based on that rule.

I’ve reviewed the community’s moderator log, and that is something they commonly do, in fact.

To speak frankly, I’d like to see a little more time and activity on your account. Here’s what I’d request from you: Start posting there some, and come back to me in one month. If I see you putting in that time, I’ll be a lot happier to hand moderator over to you. Right now, you’re a very new account, which is great - nothing bad I see - but I would just prefer to see you around a little more, then I’ll be happy to. :)

I’m definitely not a month behind, and your request sounds familiar. There are ways for things to fall through, and I think that’s what’s happened here. A month or so ago I was sitll even more new than I am now. heh. Looking at your profile, I’m comfortable giving you moderator. I assume you’re wanting the Sims 2 community, but please remind me of your request and I’ll take a look today, or at least when I hear from you.
I apologize that it got lost - and it was probably me that lost track of it specifically.

To my knowledge, it’s better to have an alt account on the instance where the community is so you get notifications of reports, which is why I think some mods appear twice in some communities. :)

Worth knowing that when I give a community to a new mod, I send a PM to the existing/previous mod (who appears to have been idle for months or years) - becuse nothing is necessarily permanent. If someone does come back, we’ll talk about reinstating them - hopefully working with the new mod because the more the merrier. I’ve only had one reply so far and it was to say “fair enough, let them have it” lol
Can only speak for lemmy.world, but figured it’s worth saying :)

Note that I have transferred both of these to you. :)

Oh, and a note on those two communites - someone (I don’t remember the username, so might even be you, but I think it’s someone else) has a pending request that is on my to-do list. I think it’s those two specifically. I just don’t have it handy in front of me - but if it is specifically those communities, probably working that tomorrow. :)
edit: lol, I got curious. It is you. Probably transfer those tomorrow :)
edit2: Actually, I see your activity in the first community I transferred which is plenty of assurance for me - went ahead and transferred. Thank you for volunteering! I’ll reply to the ticket now as well :)

Speaking only for communities on lemmy.world, since I’m an admin here and more recently am working a lot of these requests - any community that I do give to a new mod comes with the disclaimer that I contact the old mod(s) and if I’ve missed their activity, or they otherwise show up again - not much is permanent, including this. So at least here on lemmy.world, if I were to give away someone’s community and they popped up to protest, it’s all but certain I’d give it right back - although I might see if they’d be willing to bring on that other person as a mod to work with them, but as of yet this hasn’t happened, so we’ll cross that bridge when and if it does. :)
Also, to you and everyone else who moderates: Thank you. You are indeed the first line of defense against spam and bigotry, and often are integral to making your communities grow. I’ve been a moderator (and am so) as well as an administrator here, reddit, and other places - and each has its own joys and difficulties, but mods are absolutely in the trenches. :)

Speaking only for lemmy.world… I think I’m probably the main one looking at these requests right now, but I think we genereally look for:
Not so concerned about the acticity of the community per se or some of the other listed points. And if you think a community is not moderated but aren’t sure, you can ask - worst I can say is “sorry, no”. :)
If I transfer a community and the idle mod(s) come back (which hasn’t happened yet except one who replied to me and said "Oh yeah, I was gone for a long time, and it’s okay, I don’t want the community back), there’s always a chance that if they appear to truly be back to Lemmy, I might see if the requestor and they can share modship or something.
And I do look at the requestor. And not just if you have modlog entries, but the type of entries. You can run afoul of community rules and still appear to be a pretty decent person. But I have seen requests from folks who participated in many personal attacks / incivility as well as bigotry of various kinds, and… no thanks.
If you do want to take over moderating, the most important thing to us, I think I can safely say, is try to moderate fairly. It’s often subjective, but try. And definitely do not ignore open reports. You should process them - either to remove the reported content or close the report if the content is okay - ideally at least daily, but at a BARE minimum if your community has open reports older than a week, we may look to replcae you with someone who can process reports. (Disclaimer: We have some old open reports on the server and we’re working on trying to make those get processed sooner, so I’m aware this might sound ironic. We are all volunteers, and we try to give patience as well as hoping for your patience)
Feel free to ask/discuss here, but in general one of the best ways of asking us (for lemmy.world communities) is to make a thread at !c/support and ask there.
Also, if any of the folks who have asked sees this - I have a backlog a few days old - frankly, some of them I wanted to check with some of my fellow admins who have been a bit busy of late, so some things are running a little slow, but we haven’t fogotten about you. Unless we have. But I have several open requests, a couple of which I plan to work through tomorrow. :)
I’m also trying to be around more visibly here. I don’t know all of our policies or have access to all of our tools, but I can do a few things. :)
Also, I’ll give one example that still makes me happy: !c/coffee was the first request I filled as an admin, and the new mod really kicked off posting, and the community is also so active. I love seeing them pop up in the feed, and knowing that I helped in a tiny way to make that happen. So if you want to help grow a community - you can post in it and not have to moderate it - but if you want to also put in the time to work on the reported posts and comments, by all means, put in the request!
LOL! My intended joke was that in some places, that message would appear on the item that was banned, i.e. my joke was that I was banned.
That said, I like your reply, so I’m gonna go with it. <3
