I’m getting a 100% failure rate attempting to upload images today. Specifically, the POST https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image endpoint is returning a boilerplate 500 error.

It’s actually been flaky for the past couple weeks, but up until today, just repeating the upload a few times gets it to work.

This also was an issue about 3 months ago, but resolved itself within a week or so.

Images are in the 100KB to 200KB range, well below the documented 500KB limit, and my account is about 1.5 years old, so as far as I’m aware, it’s nothing on my end.

This issue has begun occurring again. (Jan 28, '25)

Same here, again. I tried uploading here multiple times both today & two days ago, but no dice. As for alts, Imgur is completely unreliable long-term, Google Drive can be tricky and cumbersome to share images from, and as for ‘one-man show’ alternatives like LensDump, who knows how long they’ll last?

Funnily enough, I just realised that if you upload an image to Reddit, then place that in the top, URL image field of a Lemmy post, it will work beautifully…!

EDIT: To upload multiple images there, you need to do it from “new Reddit.” First, go to the sub you want, and chop of the front of the URL such that it reads “sh.reddit” then go ahead and post. Certainly it will also need to satisfy the requirements of the sub in question. I’ve just tested these things out here.

Same here with re-trying a submission until it works, except the last couple days I’ve had the same issue with Lemmy.World uploads. (wow, and I just noticed they’re still running v0.19.3)

I think what might work in cases like this is using Imgur for the URL field, then manually adding a thumbnail as well (a newish feature). Or possibly with other sites (such as Lemmy instances), users won’t need to click the thumbnail / link to see the image content.

Interesting. Lemmy.world is what I use as a backup, when I can’t get an upload to lemm.ee to work, eventually. Never once had an issue.

Huh! So you’re a fellow lemm.ee-ite who doesn’t have a problem uploading pics to LW… Well, I came here to chew bubblegum and get my arse kicked, and I suppose mission two has been cleared. :S

Oh and btw-- I did try uploading an image to lemm.ee for a new post just a little earlier, and my attempts to keep re-uploading fell completely flat this time. So, yeah… it’s sadly confirmed over here.

I failed to do some uploads with sync but it worked fine through the website, I don’t know if that helps at all.
