There appears to be a serious problem with suspicious or spam accounts. Below are a few examples from just the last few weeks. This isn’t specific to just GoneWild, but to all of the NSFW communities:

Example #1: Issue with people posting pictures of people who are not themselves, or pictures of people without their consent.

  • Yesterday I noticed a picture that I had already seen posted multiple times. I looked at the user’s post and noticed that it was their only post. This was weird since I 100% had seen that picture posted already. I posted a comment asking OP about this and multiple people responded saying that they also noticed this. Then the post was deleted/removed.
  • One user told me that the user who had uploaded this pic before messaged him claiming that “my wife loves your dick” (supposedly the lady in the photo) and that they could message her on Telegram. Clearly this was suspicious and clearly the OP had not obtained consent from the woman in the photo.

Example #2: OnlyFans Bait

  • By OnlyFans bait, I mean posts that are clearly designed to drive traffic to a user’s only fans. I will not post the username to avoid calling anyone out, however there is one user that posts pictures with a watermark on every single picture that says something like “USING FREE VERSION OF THIS IMAGE SOFTWARE GENERATES THIS WATERMARK.” My suspicion was that this was done intentionally to drive traffic to their OnlyFans page (in their profile there is a link to their OF page.) I suspect that this is designed to have people subscribe to their OnlyFans page in order to see pictures without the watermark. I asked OP why she uses this software with a watermark, vs. any others that don’t have this, and the post was deleted shortly after.

Example #3: Posts saying “first time poster” when they’re not.

  • Similar to #1, people often post pictures with titles like “first time poster, tell me what you think” when I have clearly seen the image posted like 8 times under different accounts. Whenever this is called out, the post is usually deleted.

Example #4: Sympathy-bait titles

  • By sympathy-bait titles, I mean titles purposely designed to generate “sympathy and compliments” from users. For example, many times there will be a beautiful fit woman who posts a picture and the title is something like “my boyfriend said I looked fat. What does Lemmy think?” I think these types of titles are clearly fake and unhelpful. I don’t think titles should be allowed like this and just contributes to the overall sketchy issues that these communities are facing.

Example #5: Posts without gender tags.

  • This one is self explanatory. I see it all the time though. Sometimes I see a mod tell the OP to add a tag, sometimes I don’t. It really depends on the community. This rule should definitely be enforced more consistently.

Just curious if anything can or will be done to combat this type of bullcrap? It’s turning a lot of these communities into straight up spam. Is there any sort of verification system that can be used? I hate to use the R word (Reddit), but Reddit requires verification for NSFW subreddits I am pretty sure. Can something similar be done here? Posting nude pictures of people without consent is a serious issue and it’s asking for trouble if law enforcement gets involved. I have to assume that no one wants this to happen.

I hope this was acceptable to post here as I support the purpose of these communities and I don’t want to see them turn into a cesspool of sketchy posts and onlyfans bait.

Edit: sorry if this came off as bashing mods. I didn’t mean for it to be like that. Just wanted to make that clear. I highly doubt moderating a Lemmy community is easy, given the limited tools available.

    1. The majority if not all of these posts are removed, if you see a post like that report it, additionally if you recieve messages like that and you think the posts they’re making aren’t OC, please report the messages too

    2. people are allowed to have watermarks, and to minimally advertise things like onlyfans, if you see something that breaks the rules, report it.

    3. First time poster means it is their first time posting in a community, if you think you’ve seen the images posted on other accounts before, please report it

    4. If you think a title like this goes against the rules, report it, otherwise, like many communities here, it’s mostly just the admins taking care of reports when they come.

    5. Once again report these posts when you see them.

We do verification behind the scenes. Unless I have a reason to ban someone, like them not showing verification when requested or posting known stolen content as OC, I can’t just ban every account I think MIGHT be suspicious.

Sometimes moderation takes time and verification of stories, even moreso when lemmy moderation tools are limited.

People have mentioned bots that could handle these things, and yes, we have some bot functionality added where we can.

    • Known stolen images are slowly being catalogued in our admin automod bot
    • We have a simple automod bot for mods, but it seems to, as of late, not be working correctly, and even so, all it can do is create reports for the most part

These are the only two publicly available mod bots to my knowledge. We on the admin staff are volunteers and don’t really have the free time to develop a full automod bot for lemmy, although it’s something I would like to do in the future.

That being said, we are open to mods to having new mods for this specific community, I’ll probably make a post about it in the near future.

Thank you for the followup and information! Yes I report posts that seem suspicious. Lemmy is pretty bare bones so not surprising that it’s hard to catch everything. Appreciate it! Keep up the good work.

Lemmy being bare-bones is kinda by design.
This is only my opinion, but Reddit moderation got very heavy handed in many subs. Many mods got over inflated ideas of what their role was in the community. I see myself as a Facilitator of my community first, and Enforcer only when rules have been violated. I try to consciously avoid having a Gatekeeping mentality.

Ah yea. It’s a hard line to tread. You can be hands off but things get crazy. Or you can be very invovled but then accused of abusing mod power. I totally get it. It’s often hard to find a middle ground.
