Hey there everyone!
We’re 4 months into the “year of bug fixing and quality of life improvements” and I’ve been wondering how’s everyone’s experience with the game so far.
Are you enjoying improved stability and new content added with/since 4.0 dropped or are you someone plagued by bugs and server issues?
What are your thoughts about the current state of Star Citizen?
Just to be clear: this isn’t a thread fishing for negativity and complaints. I’m genuinely curious.
I put it down back in patch 3.24 I had heard that they were focusing more on fixing bugs and it shows, kind of.
Elevators aren’t scary anymore! The biggest reason I stopped playing before was the disappointment my friends had when trying it out for the first time. The bugs ruined any fun we tried to have and hours of gains would disappear in an instant from a bug or a simple mistake, so finding out that my gear didn’t die with me this time was huge relief. Now I can wear my backer rewards!
I tried doing a cargo run with my 300i but I couldn’t load the crates because they kept getting stuck. It was as if the ramp was 5 millimeters too small. Trying to unstick them got me stuck inside the ship. I was able to glitch out of the ship but ended up stuck inside of a crate. After 20 minutes of banging on the crate I gave up on anyone hearing my cries for help and logged out. An hour and a half wasted.
Next day, new idea. I’ll rent a Hull A and run cargo. Should be easier to load crates, and boy howdy it was. Picked up cargo, dropped it off, and tried to take off for more. That’s when I was visited by the ghost of glitches past.
For some reason boost keeps getting stuck on when I power up. I don’t know if it’s a me problem because last year, after mashing buttons it would ‘sometimes’ turn off but I’m running out of play time and just log off.
Back in the cockpit, try to take off, but boost is still stuck. I try one at a time and think I figured it out with a single tap of L-shift. Boost turns off. Request take off and go to launch but the ship feels like it’s glued to the pad. Thrusters are pulling but ship won’t lift. Does it have something to do with boost? Try turning gravity assist off and on again, power off and on, go back to lobby and retrieve ship, get back in cockpit and gear is still glued to the deck. Log off.
Later that day I have a free hour to play so let’s try again. Back in the cockpit of the rental. Everything is working! Lets move some cargo. Get the cargo on, drop it off, take off again, no bugs, but the cargo fins get stuck half way when I try to close them? No big deal, trucker life is good and I’ve just made more money than I’ve ever had in one run. Log off for a quick meeting and come back an hour later. Retrieve the rental and see that the fins are closed. Fly up for more cargo. I land, accept contracts and go to open the cargo fins. The cockpit cargo button isn’t working. Doesn’t even show up as selectable. I didn’t know if I’m doing it right, this is my first few flights in a Hull A and I’m not familiar with the controls. Try every button, every combination of turning it off and on again, stowing and retrieving, nothing. Log off.
Back in the cockpit, retract and extend button is working! It wasn’t me, just a bug. Load up, drop off. Get paid. Cargo containers are getting chucked around like a FedEx driver making a touchdown. Money is rolling in baby! Try to take off.
Now the boost is stuck again but a few taps around the keyboard and L-Shift seems to be the sticking button. I check to see if gear is glued but I’m able to lift up so let’s request take off. The doors open and I try to turn the ship away from the freight elevator toward the opening but nothing happens. Strafe is working but pitch and yaw are not. I’m able to strafe out sideways and up into the clouds while I fight the controls for any type of movement. Nothing. Power off and on again, check bindings, unbind and rebind. Keyboard isn’t working, flight stick isn’t working, I’m a flying paraplegic forced to only look in one direction. Begin mashing of the keyboard controls but as soon as I mash yaw AND the flight stick at the same time I get yaw back! No pitch though. So I try pitching on the keyboard and with the flight stick at the same time and it worked!..Why!!? Now I can steer with the flight stick or the keyboard and retract and extend the fins. I tell myself it’s because it’s a rental and has probably been mishandled by countless citizens. A brand new Hull A wouldn’t have these problems and I’m almost halfway to being able to afford one of my own.
Fly off to pick up more cargo and transport it for cash. I’m over half a million richer and it only took two days or hours of frustration. My friends would have strangled me in the cockpit and spaced my corpse for wasting their time.
one day…one day ✨
Other bugs along the way: -Medbay would let me check in, screen was frozen “proceed to room 0”
-Inventory sometimes wouldn’t show
-couldn’t retrieve 300i, had to log off and back on again
-walked out to landing pad on microtech, and 300i was glitched into the floor, stowing forced me to make a claim.
-300i cargo ramp wouldn’t open and the texture of the exterior of the ramp when stored is always missing.
I get glued to landing pads pretty often so if anyone knows what I’m doing wrong please let me know.
Also, is there an exterior button on the Hull A to extend and retract cargo fins? I read somewhere that Alt-k works in the cockpit but it wouldn’t work for me.
All in all I’m actually looking forward to flying again next week. Being able to do actually accomplish something was really exciting. I hope they other missions work…workish
Ooof, sounds way worse than anything I’ve experienced since my return.
The med bay, ship retrieval, ship spawning in the ground are known issues I believe. Don’t know if they’re all confirmed on the issue council so feel free to check and bump them if needed. It’s always good to let CIG know which bugs are the most common.
Could your boost issue be related to the sticky keys functionality in Windows? Just a random idea.
I’m not sure about being glued to landing pads. I THINK I read something about it around 4.0 (?) release but I have no idea what was the workaround. The one thing I could suggest is to check if you have the “proximity assist” setting enabled - it limits thrust when your ship is close to surfaces so maybe that might have something to do with it? It would most likely be a regular issue if that was the case but might be worth a try.
Which Alt + K did you press? If I recall correctly there are two key binds, Left Alt + K (extend wings/Hull-A cargo area?) and Right Alt + K (unlock physical component access). I can’t check right now to confirm so I’ll update this part if it turns out I was wrong.
Available missions are a bit limited at the moment unfortunately. They’re actively working on rewriting the old mission types for server meshing so we should have more to do (and with less issues) when 4.1.1 drops. Until then, one can only hope for a decent server.
Edit: Ah, I see QuadratureSurfer came up with the same solutions. Guess I wasn’t wrong after all.
Appreciate the feedback. I tried left Alt-L. When that didn’t work I tried right. The cockpit button wasn’t working either so maybe the whole thing was bugged. So glad you guys pointed me to proximity assist. I only check in once or twice a year and have to relearn everything. This update has me feeling like I’m starting to get the hang of things. Now that bugs are getting squashed and I can easily make money I’m planning on a rental spree. Woohoo!
Glad you’re having fun. Things really do feel better when they actually work, don’t they?
The key bind thing is weird. I checked a few different sources and everywhere Left Alt + K is mentioned as a “ship transform” key so it does seem like something is bugging out. I did a brief Issue Council search but couldn’t find anything like this - might be worth opening a new report about it.
I get glued to landing pads pretty often so if anyone knows what I’m doing wrong please let me know.
Go to Game settings and scroll down about 1/4th of the way. Look for “Defaults - Flight - Proximity Assist On” and change the value to “No”.
This will disable it by default whenever you enter any ship. You can also go into your ships MFD. Go to Configuration -> Flight -> Enable Proximity Assist
Then toggle it off.Just be careful or
Tap for Andor Season 2 episode 1 spoiler
you’ll easily end up like Andor who was slamming that tie fighter all over the walls in the Hangar.
Also, is there an exterior button on the Hull A to extend and retract cargo fins? I read somewhere that Alt-k works in the cockpit but it wouldn’t work for me.
No exterior button as far as I’ve found. The default keybind is Left Alt + K (Right Alt + K won’t do it). The ship can be landed, and it doesn’t even have to be powered on when doing it (for now at least).
Edit clarified ext. Button.
Proximity assist! Thank you o7
I’ve recently came back to the game after a short break caused by the state of the 4.0 release and I can safely say my time has been way better compared to that.
I haven’t done much for now - mostly cargo and a few bunker missions. Both worked pretty well for the most part (except for a few hostile NPCs being stuck in spawn closets every single time). No medical since this part of the game seems pretty dead right now. Oh well, maybe I’ll get lucky again some day.
I dropped into Pyro for a looksie as well. Unfortunately my PC had a bit of a rough time with locations there - not to unplayable levels but bad enough I didn’t stay there long (I’m not sure there’s much there for me anyway). It did look pretty at least.I was lucky enough to avoid most of the bugs (compared to what I’ve seen in chat at least) so I’m free from the salt that made me drop the game last time. Don’t know if I’ll stick for long considering my main gameplay loop isn’t really a thing anymore but we’ll see, I might find something new to do in the meantime.
The few issues with the game that did come up include:
- Changing components through mobiGlas doesn’t stick, no matter what. This is a problem since I’m still using my trusty Aurora most of the time and they are too outdated to have physical component access. I’m still salty CIG leaves starter ships in a shitty state despite them serving as the introduction for many new players.
- They should really cut down on Jump Point travel visuals (or give us settings to do it on our side). The experience itself is cool but boy was it rough to fly through the thing without being able to see anything for most of the trip.
Add the lowered performance due to playing on an outdated system and the whole thing ended up more exciting then expected - too bad it was for the wrong reasons. - I can only play at specific times of day so all of my sessions overlapped with periods when US players join EU servers. The moment this happens the whole atmosphere of the game shifts significantly - chat is filled with fighting, name calling and politics. Number of reported griefing (real and just unwanted PvP) skyrockets. Just being on the server feels more hostile and exhausting.
I’m not saying CIG should implement region lock but I really hope they’ll start doing their job reigning in the player base before it’s too late. There IS a point where things can go too far and scare away “normal” players for good.
All in all, it was a good experience in terms of technical performance. I’m still a bit unhappy with some of the gameplay/design decisions (both already implemented and announced) but not to a point of dropping out for good. Not yet anyway.
I’ll just try to find my own fun for now and hope for the best. That’s all I can do after all.So, I typically avoid grinding in this game. I mostly just play in ways that are fun at the moment, mess around with friends, try out new things, and contribute to bug reports hoping the most annoying things get fixed.
In 4.0 I played through the contested zones a lot. We found a number of map issues (usually climbing around vents) where you could jump out of the map and into space. There was an annoying vent that led to a dead end with a drop too deep to jump out of. One of my buddies had to incapacitate me and drag me out.
Besides that I did the event missions for the rewards.
I’ve never been much of an industry player, but the 4.0 events got me started on seriously mining/salvaging for the first time. It was fun for some solo gameplay, or if I didn’t have too much time and needed to be able to hop off at a moment’s notice.
I haven’t been playing a whole lot in 4.1, but I have had the most fun using a stealth build on a vulture and ninja salvaging the areas around the Orbital Laser Platforms.
Something I’d like to take on would be trying to figure out which ships have removable components (manually), compare it with the unpurchaseable component list, and figure out which ships/NPCs you would want to soft-death.
So far NPC Vanguard ships have been my go-to for Size 2 military components.
Heh, that’s almost complete opposite of my experience. My time with 4.0 was really short and when I do play it’s mostly solo, non-combat or pure PvE content. I haven’t touched CZs or the new Align and Mine locations purely to avoid player combat.
Something I’d like to take on would be trying to figure out which ships have removable components (manually), compare it with the unpurchaseable component list, and figure out which ships/NPCs you would want to soft-death.
Did they fix being able use NPC components? I’ve seen many people talk about them either vanishing or just not working (I don’t remember which at the moment). Can’t say I tested it myself considering the state of Aurora so I’m basing this purely on chat discussions.
I haven’t had issues with NPC components going missing. The only component you need to look out for is the jump module, but you just need to make sure you unequip that first (and save changes) before swapping out the quantum drive itself.
Other than that, the only issue I know about where swapping components makes them go missing is if you’re trying to commit insurance fraud. It can still be done, but there’s an additional check in place that attempts to mitigate players from doing that.
There could be some other issues going on.
It’s also worth pointing out that I’ve always used the mobiglass for equipping the components. If you had swapped out the components manually, you’ll still need to go into the mobiglass, change something on your ship (Unequip a missile, etc.) and then save changes, or else the new components won’t get registered for future insurance claims.
As far as the components not working… It’s possible they damaged the component beyond repair when they were attempting to soft death the ship.
Huh, the more you know… Thanks for the write up!
I’m guessing you haven’t experienced the mobiglas issue with ship changes not saving then? Looks like I’ll have to test some more when I have some time.
No problem!
Not in 4.1, but I haven’t played a whole lot there either. I did however swap out components from an NPC ship in 4.1 and I haven’t come across that issue yet.
I’m salty… This is the only serious bug I’ve had since coming back for 4.1 and it’s ever present - no matter which server, ship or time of day.
Yeah, that would be a frustrating bug for sure. Someone listed a workaround on an issue council ticket for a bug like that, but it was for 4.0.0
Hopefully it helps:https://issue-council.robertsspaceindustries.com/projects/STAR-CITIZEN/issues/STARC-84040
Tap for (possible) workaround
In this photo with the Vehicles < Mobi Glass with the Drake Corsair in display - you will see I have found a workaround to be capable of equipping the component & saving the component. There are YouTube videos for what I am about to explain here.
Instructions: (R-ALT + K) Ship Ports Unlocked > Tractor Beam Components Swapping the ones in need > Store Ship > Unequip 1 missile (or any component of your choice) > Save Changes > Close Mobi Glass > Re-Open Mobi Glass > Vehicles > Drake Corsair > Re-Equip 1 missile > Save Changes.
Once done, you may lock ship ports again. This method works with only S1 & S2 components or smaller sizes.
If you ignored my instructions & went straight to mobi-glass to equip these legal salvaged parts - you will soon find out that it will say EMPTY & changes won’t be saved properly.
Appreciate the workaround but it won’t help in my case. From the same post:
Like I’ve explained before, it becomes extremely problematic for ships with zero access to their components like the Drake Cutlass models, Redeemer, Connie models, Valkyrie, etc.
That’s my exact problem as neither Aurora nor C8R (the only ships I own) have physical access to components. Thanks for trying to help though!
Edit: Alright, I checked other issues linked in the one you posted and I found another workaround that did work for me. I’ll copy it here in case someone has the same issue.
Another workaround
Only need to sync your time , the clock in your machine is wrong
How to sync time in Windows 11: Settings -> Time & Language -> Date & Time -> Additional Settings -> Sync Now.
I have no idea what kind of spaghetti code connects mobiglas functionality to client date but apparently wrong time on your PC can cause problems. I’m not sure if I’m impressed or terrified.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I’m finally free!
