I remember asking him “How do people stand having so much of what they’re trying to watch pushed aside for ads?” Not to mention how many ads there are on the screen all over the stadium, the graphics, the announcers’ scripts, etc.
the sheer number of people I know that still use chrome despite me telling them that chrome is the reason their adblocker doesn’t work as well and doesn’t work at all on youtube blows my mind. They care enough to use an adblocker but then the most intrusive ads (long video ads, midrolls, etc.) they just shrug.
And thats not to mention the huge number of people that just don’t block any ads. Ads are literally spyware in addition to being annoying, but apparently that’s fine

Any entertainment I watch online with ad-blockers, so whenever I visit my family and they have the TV on I’m blown away by how constant the ads have gotten, like how short the segments of the actual shows are relative to the frequency and length of the ad-breaks between them. I don’t know how they put up with it in general.
If I could even be bothered to remember what was advertised I would go out of my way not to buy it.
Ads aren’t there to convince you to buy something. Ads are meant to place subconscious familiarity with a brand so the next time you’re shopping for a product you haven’t bought before, you’re subconsciously biased towards the brand that wormed into your brain through ads.

My armchair analysis is that it’s a common theme in futuristic space media to show that the Earth is much more united now that there are other worlds with which to fight, form tenuous alliances, etc. China is the biggest, most distant Other, so merging them into the American melting pot in your lore is the strongest way to make that point.
If two political bodies that were once very distinct in the past are now just provinces in a single nation, the cheapest way to extend that pattern into the future is to do what they did. It’s a bit cliché but I wouldn’t consider it the worst writing sin in the world if they had just made the characters and casting reflect that.
Side note: across Firefly and Dollhouse, there aren’t that many black characters either, and a uncomfortably large proportion of them are villains.

In the audio commentary of the pilot episode (it’s been 10,000 years so might be a different episode) Whedon talks about the war being space US Civil War and Mal is inspired by the confederate soldiers who went west after the war because the inner planets = manufacturing power and center of government like the north, and outer planets = agrarians who are having their ‘rights’ trampled like the south. Obviously it’s a prime time show from 2001 written entirely by white people so there’s no discussion of slavery, the closest it gets is one episode does feature an outer planet guy who ‘owns’ people via their debts to him

I’d want to look more closer towards the Soviet and all other socialist state systems. If I recall, Anna Louise Strong’s books, specifically ‘this Soviet world’, have sections detailing the treatment of orphans in the post-revolutionary war period. I remember being rather impressed with what I read at the time. I also can think whatever adjustments I’d personally make would include working on destigmatizing the negative perception of being an orphan or a foster child among a plethora of other subjects that would need to be addressed.
Insofar as I’m concerned no child should be subject to abuse or alienation regardless of the circumstances of their birth or life.

-I dunno if it’s everywhere or local to the midwestern city I live in but they’ve quietly gotten rid of all the school busses, so now every school zone in this relatively large city has enormous lines that choke every road in and out of every school in the city twice a day for two hours. It’s a massive inconvenience to the entire city that’s been justified as a ‘cost savings’ when in reality it’s just throwing that cost onto everyone else in a less efficient way.
-Low hanging fruit but Harry Potter. There’s a lot of anti-Rowling sentiment these days that tries to separate her from the world she created but it’s very obvious that all the nasty shit about her made it into the series. Obviously around here people don’t generally like the books but the general public has not seriously read them since they were children and thinks they’re awesome.
Oh god completely hear you on the school car lines. I don’t even think my town has gotten rid of the school busses, but every suburbanite parent I guess feels like they have to drive their kid to and from school in a big suv these days. Annoying as hell, and it’s like every single school around here with these lines too.
Imagine delivering parcels in these neighbourhoods, you just have to know which roads are completely impassible at what times, and plan your day around it, good fucking luck if you don’t know the area in extreme detail.
Where I live this happens at all the bougie private schools and they don’t bother trying to line up, they just park wherever they want, including the bike lane, on the crosswalk, on the sidewalk, and then complain about 1984 totalitarianism when they get a ticket
