We got a new microwave at work that locks the door when food is cooking. There is a button you have to push to unlock it even after if is done heating. I’ve never had a microwave like that before.

Which is exactly what my microwave has. A knob for the time and a button to open the door. Bought it for 30€ last year and its a wonderful piece of technology.

I want a loud reminder beep! That can’t be disabled. That never stops. So if I’m warm and comfortable in a blanket, or the cat is sleeping on me, or I get busy with something else… It will still beep every few minutes, until the heat death of the universe!

Seriously, wtf are these designers actually thinking!?

And if you answer COME GET YOUR FUCKING FOOD by hitting the +30 Seconds button it’ll beep even louder and say YOU FORGOT TO PUT THE FOOD IN, STUPID!

The god damn NES, from 1983, could make sounds besides shrill monotone square waves of varying length. Why are your beeps worse than a video game that weighs forty kilobytes?

If you have a built in microwave, never buy Thermador appliances.

Microwaves are a solved problem, right? Outside of a few variations everyone has pretty much decided how a microwave should be, yes? Wrong. Thermador microwaves are the stupidest product of any kind I have been unfortunate enough to use in a while.

I assume a lot of people are like me, they think a microwave is a microwave. When I looked at new appliances I dove deep on the fridge, the cooktop, and the oven. Then, after I made my decision, I just got a microwave, dishwasher, and hood to match.

I went to use the stupid thing and holy shit, the beeping, the multiple submenus for standard cooking, the beeping, scrolling through numbers, the beeping, one button push with a flourish of sounds and screen animation just to wake it up then another button push with more sound to get to the first of the submenus, the beeping.

All the posts online begging for an OTA update (because, of course, everything is wifi now even a fucking microwave), people telling you how to open it up and cut the speaker wire so you don’t wake every neighbor in a 1/2 mile radius when you want to heat something up at 1am, some people going so far as to put the Thermador handles on a bosch (the same company so you know they’re capable of making something that isn’t stupid). I never saw any of these because who checks reviews on a microwave? It’s a well regarded appliance manufacturer, and it’s just a fucking microwave.

    Never buy Thermador.

Our microwave oven has an “on” button, for whatever reason. Not a button that starts the microwaving, just one that turns on the display and enables you to push the other physical buttons. If you turn it on and then don’t press anything else for a certain time, it will angrily beep at you.

They could just as well have skipped this and made it turn on when you press any button, and then turn off after a certain time of inactivity.

…and fewer physical controls. Everything in a submenu with hard-to-identify icons.

    Brilliant idea! 🥇

I miss my old microwave. It had like 4 buttons and a dial. It had all the features I’d ever needed(defrost, power levels, sensor cooking(popcorn, reheat, etc)).

The best feature though was just the dial. You want to set time…turn dial. The faster you turned it the faster the time increased. It had single second accuracy if you turned it slowly. When you stopped turning it, a light next to the start button would start blinking practically screaming ‘press me’.

Didn’t matter if it was 33 seconds or 15 minutes. You could set time on that thing in 1-2 seconds and be gone.

Never had to explain how to use it. Everybody that came to my house was like…”how does your microwave work?…never mind, figured it out” in literal seconds.

Happy days! Do any of them have dials now?

I think that my old one had a temperature dial, a timer dial, a start button and an open/stop button. And a mechanical ping, not a BEEEEEEEP!

There was one with dial on Lemmy a couple days ago. Whole minutes increment only, up to 30 mins

          Looked cool though

My current microwave has a dial but also like 30-40 buttons and it’s a shit show.

To use the dial you first have to hit the ‘cook time’ button then turn the dial which only works in 15 second increments. Then you have to push the dial not once but twice before it starts…and if you tap it twice too quickly it won’t work.

Also, let’s lock some functions behind an app, and maybe even add a subscription! Ooh, and let’s also say our microwave is “AI powered”, that’s what sells recently!
