I appreciate the qualifier of not having ideation. I’m not trans but I do have suicidal ideation and decided that gun ownership would be a bad idea.

Yeah, one cannot defend themselves from external threats if they can’t defend themselves from their own brain. But you can always push a friend who doesn’t have any ideations to defend you if necessary.
I have a few folks who have my back, and I carry an IFAK with me in case I need to render aid to someone who is hurt.

I’m in the same boat. These days I feel like it’s mostly under control but occasionally a bad day happens and if I had the means … Well, it doesn’t take much effort to pull a trigger and I know it.
I’ve decided the best way I can support and help should violence erupt is to cultivate other skills, like learning some EMS skills or having a garden. Still learning but I think those things might ultimately be more helpful than the gun anyway.
Yeah, it’s better now for me than a few years ago but I still have those thoughts from time to time.
Right, but nothing about the other 20+ shootings that were done by white men. Those guys can have as many guns as they want.

Remind me who those people were? Regular citizens wanted to go in and shoot the Uvalde shooter themselves. The “professionals” arrested them for it.
that brings up another good point. “good guys” is obviously a subjective label that has no basis in reality. if you’re a “good guy,” with a gun, and you’re in a firefight with “bad guys,” then how do the “professionals” differentiate between the bad guys and good guys–when they finally show up? because if there’s shooting going on and the cops show up, and you’re standing there with a firearm, then whether or not they just go ahead and shoot you largely depends on how white you are. if you’re black, they might just shoot you regardless of whether you have a gun. this is the world we live in.
the answer to all of this is of course to get rid of the guns, which will obviously never happen. so in the current fascism i have to agree with other commenters and say BUY GUNS NOW, BEFORE YOU CAN’T
and for the love of fuck, get rid of the whole “i hate guns i’ll never touch a gun” bullshit. ESPECIALLY if you have people who need protecting from fascism.
