Gamers have sleepwalked into Digital monopolies. I miss the days where you could buy a disc pop it in and just play. If you didnt like it could trade it or sell it afterwards.

Problem with downloads is it holds the price line high as there’s no second hand market. Two you are tied to valve/having me gamepass just to get the game to run even if the game does not require online or multiplayer functions. Gaming is being ruined.

GOG and piracy are more embraced and accepted than ever among gamers, so that’s a start. Although the digital monopolies is mostly confined to the console audience, if you want my opinion.

They get fucked the most because of their locked down OS and software platform. PC users have no such jails.

We are pretty much held hostage now. Can’t even buy and own your own game. It’s not just about cost, restricted accessibility is an issue. I remember when game pirating was popular. And the same companies are pretty much opening that door again. If buying isn’t owning piracy isn’t stealing

It also provided an option for self-publishing and distributing Indie games.

Except in certain markets like Nintendo’s, game devs say that you either sell full price on release or you sell discounted during sale events, but selling full price in a later date doesn’t work unless your game is a unicorn. Selling physical media was both a gamble and very expensive so games never got the discounts we commonly see nowadays.

Plus if your local shop didn’t have copies, the game sold well or there were any distribution issues, you would never see that game. Distribution was one of the reasons why so many Japan exclusives during the 16-bit and 32-bit era never made it to other regions (until now).

I do appreciate your consideration though, that’s why we use ntag cards at home ;)
