Most intensive farming isn’t profitable at all anywhere in the global north, save for specialized crops or huge mega Corp-owned farms.

That’s the whole reason the EU spends 40% of its budget on agricultural subsidies, because the landowners and agrobusiness ghouls decided that having capital-intensive, expensive farming was a good price to pay. That, and guaranteed food security for all of the EU.

When the UK opted out of the EU, they lost whatever little they got from the common agricultural policy funds, and also lost the mandate to keep their farming sector alive.
