Yes im aware some folks would consider that a first world problem but it kills all of my sparetime. Like I just spent over 19h in bed yesterday. It completely fucks up my sleep rythm as you can imagine. I just enjoy dreaming to much and the peaceful oblivion that sleep brings.
How do I sleep less ? I had a sleep rythm before that wasnt optimal but I could work with it. If I set an alarm I usually get up before it rings and turn it of. I already set 2 alarms.
If you wonder how that works with work- I basically do freelance work and as long as I finish my work within the deadlines all is good. So I dont have set work times like a normal human bean… Which doesnt help. The last couple of years I have been basically a nocturnal creature.
I have like 0 willpower when it comes to sleep
Sorry for being a girlfailure

I guess my sleep problems are the imho most embarassing thing about me. So now I have shared my very soul essence with Hexbear.
Nothing wrong with enjoying sleep, no need to worry just make sure that
Like I just spent over 19h in bed yesterday.

I don’t mean to be flippant but maybe there’s an underlying medical issue. Can you get to a doctor to run some tests?
Thats kind of my point. I would be toally fine if I just slept 9-10 h on the regular but sometimes I legit am in bed for longer than 12h+ and that is when It gets “worrysome”.
Mind you I had a similar phase a couple of years ago that normalized after a while.

Yeah, my first reaction was that these phases come and go.
There have been periods in my life in which I’d sleep 9 hours a day and not feel rested. I sleep around 6.5 nowadays and feel ‘normal’. When I was on Mirtzapene, an antidepressant, I’d sleep around 12 hours a day.
If you’re genuinely sleep 19 hours, I think you should check in with a doctor.
I would also second running a medical panel but FWIW I also just settle into a pattern of 12-14h sleep followed by 20-24hrs awake if left to my own leisure.
I do feel fine averaging 8 hrs/night on a traditional schedule, maybe a little more ideally. I do 5hrs on weekdays and 12-13hrs on weekends.
I know this answer is supremely unhelpful but you really do need a reason to get up and maintain the schedule. For me it’s work, because I am blessed (/s) to be working in the office 13+ hrs/day.
Honestly if it’s not negatively impacting your health or your life, sleep away. Maybe just set an alarm and start your day with a workout at the same time daily so you can “landmark” your day to something?
You’re not a girlfailure sweetie, nor a failure in any other sense. Come here

Going by personal experience with sleeping way too much, have you got your blood checked for any deficiencies lately? I know for me it was a huuuuge lack of vitamin D and iron, where the supplements ultimately helped me with literally wanting to sleep less and feeling good about it. (Now I’ll just daydream more and feel better in general.) Maybe this’ll help you too.
But in all honesty, looking at the world around us, I can also fully understand wanting to dream and sleep more. Dreams are a really nice getaway that doesn’t cost money, so I can relate.

Absolute truth

:peterson-red: Seething chud productivists pissing and shidding themselves over Chad dream enjoyers :gigachad-hd:
I’ve also struggled with sleep issues in the opposite direction; usually waking up in the middle of the night and unable to go back to sleep. I want more consistency but sleep is frustratingly uncontrollable. Further defending @9to5@hexbear.net’s sleep, you are getting your work done on your own schedule that satisfies your clients, so society and the Superego have no business judging you for what you enjoy. Hustle Culture can get fucked.
Get a blood panel done, my friend was similar and found out she was anemic + low on vitamin D
Modafinil if you can get a prescription. There used to be other ways like ordering online or getting a prescription online from the online foreign pharmacy that sells it you. I don’t know if it still works but information will probably be on
r/nootropics or r/modafinil. I got it prescribed for same reasons but I stopped needing it after I quit most of my other meds. I heard doctors often don’t prescribe in Amerikkka because insurance or something. Are you tired all the time when you’re awake? If so then you need to see a doctor, it’s probably something physiological that’s out of whack.
Are you in bed awake and half-awake, or are you actually sleeping? If you’re up but still in bed, you probably need to incentivize yourself to get out of it when you wake up, and orient your living space to steer you away from the bed.
If it feels like you’re not getting good quality sleep, maybe there’s something interfering with it.
Im not really anymore tired than usual when im awake.
If Im in bed I legit sleep 16- 19h just with like about 4-5 breaks inbetween. The breaks are anything from 1-5 minutes and I barely leave the sleep properly. Except for when I wake up to turn of alarms and probably 1 break for going to the toilet.
This is followed by staying awake for what is basically 20+h . I will usally nap 1-2 times in that time frame though . Naptime is 90min to 120min at most
Mind you this is a recent development. Which I hope to fix with a vacation coming next week.
In theory I only need to work today (Im awake and ready for work) and I need to work on Friday (so I have thursday to sleep)
This sounds rather like a longer or dilated chronotype then.
If you’re not sleeping 19 hours out of every day, but instead doing something like 24 on and 16 off, who’s to say there’s something wrong with that? Except when/if there are regular obligations that you have to attend to.
I actually just brought this up to both my psych and regular doctor last week. Turns out I have SUPER low T, which we all agree is where we’re gonna start on that issue. Heopfully it removes the whole ‘I’m always tired’ feeling. I’m consistent with sleeping 9 hours a night, and then taking a 60-90 minute nap every day. I don’t REALLY feel good until 430ish, but that only lasts til about 8, and then I start thinking about and getting ready for sleep again.
one thing I have done in my endless struggle with sleep is to track how much I sleep for a week or two. i think paper is best but if you use computer instead make sure it is something you can easily look at in entirety. make a grid with 7 days across the top and 24 hours along the side. then color the blocks to indicate sleep or awake. you can also add more detail like “trying to sleep/wake”, work/school, exercise, drinking/drugs/caffine, alone/social time, whatever. but just sleep and awake is useful because you can count the sleep blocks and average out to find out how much you actually sleep. and see the overall pattern visually.
i was very surprised to find out I actually sleep about 8-9 hours per day. over the years I have done this and it is consistent through various lifestyles. my body just have a lot of inertia. once it is in one state it will keep going. physiological difficulty switching tasks.
i have various wake up strategies when I need to wake up. i have never found a way to force myself to get up at a certain time “because I should”. like you I will simply do whatever is required to disable the alarms and go back to bed.
after years and years of struggle my preferred option is to arrange my life to allow flexibility. i think other people are able to overcome this so it is worthwhile to try. if not already done you could look into medical causes like thyroid, sleep apnea or other disorders, mentalhealth depression neurodivergence. could also investigate melatonin which is a pretty benign drug (when used as directed) which is indicated for this kind of problem. it is available without prescription in a lot of places.
anecdotally, I have been told by many people that a surefire way to solve this problem is to have a baby.
Alright. on my way to get pregnant
so clarification, you slept for 19 hours, does that mean you were awake for 5/24 hours prior, as others are assuming? if you are literally sleeping 19h/day x 7days each week, that’s different.
Its like im 20h in bed and followed by 20h awake and so on ,
I have slept for >24 hours after being awake for 2-3 days. To whatever extent that is a problem, the awake is equal problem as sleep. So you should do the chart thing I said to at least have a grasp on the situation. If you are 20h/20h then you are sleeping avg 12h/day which is way less severely abnormal than 19h/day. “8 hours” is a kind of general guideline — middle of the bell curve. There are people at the tails of the bell. 4 and 12 hours. But it isn’t just that you need more sleep, it’s that you also need/take more awake. Most people do not stay up for 20 hours by choice! So all these things people are saying about fatigue are not it; if you were fatigued this would not be possible. Obviously if you stay awake for a long time, you will sleep long to compensate.
The issue is the whole cycle not sleep. Work, drugs/meds/substances, physical activity, socializing, screens, food, sex, noise, light, temperature, habits, extrinsic demands + innate temperament are all potentiially contributing.
So I dont think I have ever been awake for 2 days ? like I do try not to surpass 30h Today is probably going to be a 30h day but I will try to fit a 2h nap in there somewhere
Right, so if you can plan to stay awake for 30h than you are not plausibly having a fatigue issue. It would be impossible with some of the health issues proposed in this thread. Quite abnormal even without those. But naturally you will sleep a lot after. if sleep wake is averagely 16h:8h (2:1), that gives 30h:15h approximately. So I am not finding it strange to sleep 19h if you are keeping hours like this.
It is an issue with circadian rhythm. Things that could help if you have the discipline for them are
- exercising or doing physical labor heavily during the day (this is really helpful IME)
- refraining from screens after certain hours; or refraining from specific known stimulating activities like games socials chats sexstuff tv news whatever
- eliminating or strictly scheduling stimulant chemicals (only drinking 1 coffee before noon etc); don’t forget to consider nicotine
- if prescribed stimulants take exactly as ordered
- consider adjusting if dose to be shorter acting or to have longer acting in the evenings (some people need stimulants in the PM to help them sleep!)
- sleep hygiene
- set a bed time on a 24 hour schedule and go to bed at that time every single day; establish bed time routine (treat yourself like a child)
- CBT for bedtime / wake up habits (I haven’t tried this one but I am considering)
But I am guessing if you plan for a 30h waketime, there is some reason for that too? Work demands? Plans stacked up to not allow sleep? So you must decide if this is your lifestyle that you are doing, or if those underlying reasons can/should be modified. Because you cannot expect to have such long wakefulness without long sleeping. About 1/3 time is normally spent sleeping. Some people more and some people less.
I’d try to reset your sleep schedule. Get 4 hours of sleep, and then see what time you start to get exhausted and record that as the time you should go to sleep. This should be the time you go to sleep every night, with 15 minute of variation being allowable. As soon as you wake up, take a caffeine pill. You won’t be able to sleep after 30 minutes of that, and once you want to get up, go outside for a bit. Try to focus on getting exercise, natural light, and habits (for example, you should try to never go back to bed after an alarm and only have one alarm).
You’ve probably got depression. I’m gonna give you a prescription for joining up with a group of revolutionaries and overthrowing your oppressors. Obviously, your body isn’t going to be able to handle such a high dose just yet, but we’ll increase your tolerance by first baby stepping you into some mutual aid and then some light arson. Basically just follow the directions on the package until you’re standing on the neck of a billionaire. And whatever you do, don’t stop taking that shit halfway through! We’ve got a real problem with revolutionary resistant billionaires because people keep getting released valve and assuming they’re cured. You gotta complete the full course!
Not bad advice. early morning meetings, actions, pickets and other plans will test your body’s resolve to stay sleeping.
But— running on adrenaline to counteract depression might work for some, not all. It might shake up the internal as well as external status quo. Eventually, there is adjustment and back to homeostasis.
I just enjoy dreaming to much and the peaceful oblivion that sleep brings.
It’s not about chasing adrenaline, it’s about actively participating in their own liberation. Building a world they want to spend time in.
do a walking around day once per week and compare how much stuff you did, like say museums or nature
