I still don’t fully trust Graphene OS but it is certainly better than stock
Nice. The upcoming Razr Ultra flip phone. Those are nice. Pretty much exactly what I want. An outside display that can pretty much do everything and an inside display that’s very wide for streaming PC games from my desktop. Movies too look great with the nearly 21:9 inner display.
Hoping to see low end devices too. Would love a trial phone. Those Razr flip phones are expensive. Would rather wait for those to be less than half the price used on ebay
my two cents, be careful with the folding phones. those inner screens are plastic and scratch super easily. you can’t really put a screen protector on them and cases leave the hinges exposed. all the while it’s one drop or close away from a screen replacement so expensive you’ll just go buy a new phone.
the part alone for one of the razr ultra displays is about 350.
some people really like them but I personally think they’re poorly marketed as an every day device. I would love to see graphene os improve the options for the people who do really like the foldables.
I love my foldable and am kinda excited at the idea of graphene OS!
I do worry about the cost, of repair or replacement.
I’m fortunate I can do my own repairs, but still the parts are pricey as you say.
For me the utility of the big screen is worth it!
ah! I love to hear that honestly. being able to do the repairs honestly fixes 90% of my issue with them. they’re not easy phones to work on and that tends to be reflected in repair costs. I just really hate to see devices with 500$ screen replacements and 150$ battery replacements.
I guess since I do it for work I tend to see more of the fails and the ones that didn’t make it.
what do you use the bigger screen for? I’ve personally never seen the appeal, even for watching things I usually would refer a monitor or tv. is game streaming really that decent at this point? (if you have experience with that)
Yeah, back when i was fixing phones for a living, people would ask me what the best brands were. I’d reply “don’t ask me, I only see the broken ones. Could be millions of happy ones out there I’ll never meet”
I do worry about the difficulty of the repair too. I wonder if it would be harder, or just use my existing skills and take me longer. Used to be able to do an iPhone screen in ten or fifteen minutes!
I don’t do a lot of gaming on my phone, but the little I do is cool on the big screen. It’s lovely to be able to see the whole email at once or when looking at a whole document.
I always had the big big screen phones before this, so in some ways it’s a smaller phone for my pocket, without sacrificing screen size. Great for web pages, really lovely when online shopping and such.
And my eyesight isn’t what it used to be!
But in the end, if I’m really honest, I got it because it’s flashy gadget tech. And I love that. So long as I can make it my own, add my own launcher and run Tasker, I’ll suffer the odd little proprietary nonsense, and disable every piece of Bloatware I can.
But to have Graphene! I wonder if it would work with the bank apps?
Depending on how you use your phone this concern may not be as big as you think, flip phones spend the vast majority of time with the screen closed and protected. My partner got a 2024 Razr and has been using it daily for 1.5yr without any scratches or other screen related issues (there’s some expected slowness from the clunky MTK processor of course). I was skeptical of the durability at the time but for $450 with an 18mo warranty including accidental damage figured it was worth the risk. The technology is much more mature than I realized.
I have and still enjoy my fold, but I took into account the cost of insurance when I got it because I knew the inner screen was susceptible to damage. Had it for two years and just having some minor issues at the edge where it folds now, probably going to about land close to evenly on the cost to insure over the 2 years vs out of pocket repair. They are getting better with the tech tho, and with wider adoption I expect repair costs to decrease in the future. Triple folds are now going to be the area where you’re asking for trouble.

This is great news in general, but it’s also a bit of a bummer that it will (at least initially) be limited to extremely expensive phones. The recently-announced Moto Signature has “a starting MSRP of €999”.
But MSRP is a joke so I really have no idea what the street price will be in practice.
Considering the cost of RAM next year, how close are you to your kidneys? Do you have a favorite?
Hint, with kidneys bigger is often not better. Ask a nephrologist with help with this choice.

So Motorola, the one currently SHOVING “glance ai” down my throat will somehow stop doing that and instead do something nice like … A privacy focused de-googler?! BIG DOUBT … Bigly doubt
Tbh its actually Lenovo using the Motorola brand, Motorola hasnt made consumer smartphones in years.
They might realize they can capitalize both markets and be an early adopter to a formerly niche market. Nothing will stop them from passing the “glance ai” on suckers and selling identical hardware with a security focused OS.
They don’t need to stop, GrapheneOS will just be an officially supported alternative OS. Their own Android flavour can still be as full of crap as ever.
